This is about as authentic as a taverna can be in an old English City. Extended Greek family managing front and back of house with great sense of hospitality. I loved it and will be regular.

Arrived on a Monday, and sampled the Mystery Mezze. Highly recommended. Food very high quality and staff were warm and friendly. Lovely location too, close to the cathedral. £54 for family of 4 with drinks and desert.

Unusually not having been to Wells for several months, we were both intrigued and eventually delighted to trip over this little gem. situated opposite the pedestrian access to a council car park, we almost walked past as we always have done in the past, but at the last moment did a double take as we saw the magic words Greek Taverna. Further exploration confirmed that this small, backstreet pub has indeed been converted to a Greek restaurant, so we immediately bagged a table for a late lunch after completing our shopping.

By the time we returned, a small wedding party had finished, so from the good choice of tables, we elected for a central spot near the bar, so we could see all the action.

The welcome was warm and friendly and the same positive approach was evidenced by everyone working in their. Most of the staff appear to be Greek, which adds to the atmosphere, hearing everyone talk to each other in Greek and unusually for Greek restaurants here, the owners and our very helpful and informative waitress were all from mainland Greece rather than being Greek Cypriots. Nevertheless, the smallish menu is pretty much what one would expect, with the usual range of dips and halloumi to start with and the mains also following traditional lines. A few specials are a little more adventurous, featuring dhakos and briam when were there. Fortunately, the ingredients and the cooking were good enough to make the limited variety of menu irrelevant. Although they have their own meze selection in the menu, we had elected to make up our own from our favourite dishes. Hummus and tzadziki both seemed fresh and light on the palate and made strong but not overwhelming use of garlic. Halloumi gheese was lightly cooked, so retained a juicy springiness rather than being a dessicated rubber plank. The loukanika and chips main course, which we had opted to share as part of this meze was also good, with customer made sausages (from a local supplier to their order) and the chips good too. The retsina is a cut above the usual, with an almost fruit/floral overtone in addition to notes of the traditional pine resin. The greek coffee was served properly very sweet upon request, accompanied with loukoumia (i.e. Greek Turkish delight!).
The final delight was the bill, which was very reasonable for the quality of food and dealt with promptly, rather than that dreadful hanging around waiting which infects so many places these days and can ruin an otherwise pleasant evening.

All in all , a very pleasant lunch, which reminded us of at least two of the reasons we love Greece (food and people) and why, like Greece, this place is definitely worth another visit.

We visited here today after seeing previous trip advisor reviews and speaking to Olga on Facebook. We were staying in Cheddar and as we normally spend our wedding anniversary in Greece, thought it would be nice to have a Greek lunch to celebrate the day.
We arrived just after midday after a walk around the beautiful, tiny city of Wells, it was extremely warm so the cool white interior of The Sun was very welcome. A table had been reserved for us in the window of the lovely fresh looking restaurant.
There were 3 adults and 2 children (11 and 2) we chose a Meze starter for 2 and an extra starter of grilled feta, thinking the children could share with us. Wow! I don't know where to start, the Meze included Calamari, roasted peppers and courgettes, vine leaves, olives, 2 types of pitta, a cabbage and carrot salad, houmous, taramasalata, tzatziki, feta and chilli dip and a beetroot dip, everything was amazing!! And the grilled feta was out of this world! The 2 year old fell in love with the (pink) beetroot dip, girly just like her and the 11 year old stole almost all the calamari!! I cant pick a favourite part, everything was beautiful!
For mains, 2 of us had the stifado from the specials board which rivalled anything we have had in Greece, one had the grilled chicken breast with rice and skordalia, and both kids have half size portions of pork souvlaki which came with pita, salad, lovely homemade chops and more tzatziki. We just wish that we had made room for dessert but after the Meze and the mains we were stuffed!!
The meal for 3 adults and 2 kids including starters and mains and 2 soft drinks, a pint of Stella and a large Pinot Grigio came to £75. Fantastic value for amazing food. Iced water was given without asking at the start if the meal, and our girls were treated at the end with little biscuits.
If you want a chilled out, relaxed meal where the standard of food meets that of any Greek Island restaurant then the Sun Inn will provide that. Just wished we lived closer than almost 4 hours away!!!

We visited this restaurant on a recent short break to Wells. A genuine Greek family restaurant in a tastefully renovated pub. Excellent hospitality and service. Quality food and drink at pub prices. Altogether a really welcome change from the usual pub or 'Italian' chains. In fact it was so good, we went back the following evening. Wish it was in Worcester!
