“very helpful staff”

There was a super photographic exhibition of old Somerset on when we visited and we found this very interesting. Lots of help at the front desk which doubles as tourist information.

“Worth a visit.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2014

There were some interesting exhibits which they obviously change regularly as some rooms were closed for an easter exhibition.
We were the only ones there so felt conspicuous. Some of the exhibits were aged but the information labels were good.

“Very good”

Staff were very helpful. Exhibits were laid out well and very interesting. They are doing some work there at present for a new exhibition so did not charge entry because of this.

“The Pink Building on the Close”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2014

Tight little Museum, apparently specialising in minerals, mining (from the days of the Romans) and caving in the Mendips (although that particular section is undergoing refurbishment at present) and including the different stones and carving techniques used on the Cathedral. Close-up information on how the various carvings on the Cathedral West Front have been 'distorted' to look natural from far below. Evidence that the West Front was initially very brightly painted.

Highlight for me: a tiny portable Victorian sewing machine! 1876??

In addition some delightful 18th century samplers, sadly in very dim light for preservation purposes. And currently a wonderful photographic exhibition of times past in Somerset and further afield by Reece Winstone (look him up)

Wells Tourist Information is housed here as will shortly be the Wells City Archive.
Currently there is no fee since they are undergoing refurbishment in several rooms.
