Absolutely love this place, would recommend to anyone thinking about going. I have been with family, friends, for birthdays etc. Lunch menu is superb as is the dinner menu. Always changing the menus so it's not the standard same old, Great choices, super wine and great service!

We have been visiting this restaurant when it was 'Pastiche' and later meta morphed into '1709'. We've always enjoyed the slightly quaint rustic ambience, which together with the reasonably priced meals made it an enjoyable experience. However this is our second visit within 3 months and on both occasions we have felt that the service has been extremely poor. At lunchtime today 8 of us waited some considerable time between courses. Twice members of our party, actually had to leave the table and request service for further drinks and for the dessert menu. The table had not been cleared until they were prompted to bring the dessert menu.

With regard to the meal. Two of us had the soup for a starter. This was broccoli with bacon lardons & croutons. It was green and yes there was some bacon, but other than that there was no taste at all. The main courses were ok, but those who had mussels complained that of the 12 or 14 mussels on their dish, at least 6 were empty shells. I had the bacon steak with potato. This was fine, but it would have been so much better with half the potato and some fresh vegetables.
Fresh vegetables were available but at an extra cost. Similarly for dessert I asked for blueberry tart which was served with clotted cream. As I preferred ice cream, I asked whether this could be served instead of the clotted cream. I was told yes, but there would be an additional charge! You couldn't make this up. Needless to say I declined the offer and the sweet. Great for my diet but not for their till or subsequent bookings! Next time we'll try The Olive Tree, initially slightly more expensive but at least they won't quibble about a scoop of ice cream and they'll season the broccoli soup!

Simple well cooked food, friendly informal service from young staff. Good value set menu with reasonable supplements for some dishes.
Slightly rushed service.
Building could do with some TLC.

We firstly visited this restaurant when it was Pastiche many years ago. We then had a break for a number of years and returned in 2012 when it was 1709. On this occasion we ate at 9 pm and it was a case of hurry up as you are the last to be served.
We decided to give it another go last weekend as the reviews were positive. Unfortunately, we had the same experience. The food was generally ok however the service let it down. Over the course of 1 hour we had three different waiter/waitresses and were never asked at any point if the meal was ok and did we need anything (ie drinks and condiments etc)
The final straw was as we were eating our dessert they were not only cleaning up but spraying cleaning fluid right next to us.
To top this off when we came to pay our bill we were made to wait whilst staff chatted and the bill was incorrect when it arrived.

We will not be rushing back!

1709 was a joyful find. For one, the staff worked as a team. Nothing was too much trouble.

The food was excellent, well-presented, fresh and hot. The thought and care that went into every course was evident.
