“Charming (just a bit noisy)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2013

Lovely hotel, lots of charm, nice rooms although they do vary a lot in size and in quality (some getting a bit tired). Comfortable little bar area with a terrace out the back. Excellent breakfast. Overall good service from a friendly staff. A wide choice of restaurants just outside the front entrance. Only downside is the noise in the morning as deliveries to the hotel start very early. I suppose the prixe to pay if you want good beer in the bar. Would definitely recommend.

I visited the hotel as a solo traveller for one overnight. The hotel is in a good location close to a very nice Wetherspoons pub, in Lichfield. I was allocated a spacious and clean double room even though I was a single traveller. The bar had closed when I returned from a night out around midnight but there was bar service available for residents. The staff were friendly and helpful particularly the night porter who organised the after hours drinks. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice on offer the next morning.

I would recommend this Hotel ton anyone looking for a good value for money budget hotel in the Lichfield area.

Room Tip: Limited car parking available but there is a NCP car park next to the hotel.

I stayed here for a night in the middle of April and it was ok, but just ok. The hotel itself is fairly nice with a decent bar/lounge and restaurant, staff were all very nice and the wifi was quick with good coverage.
The room was very small and the bed was, for my tastes, far too soft. It was like sleeping on a bag of jelly. The other big downside was that our room faced out on to the street and, it being a Saturday night, there was a lot of noise. They have made an effort to sound proof the bedroom with an extra PVC window cover but not in the bathroom so a lot of noise still bled through.
The breakfast buffet in the morning was alright but nothing to rave about. Overall it was ok and I would probably come back if I ever have to return to Lichfield.

Room Tip: Request a room at the back of the hotel. Directly opposite the front are several bars and restaurant...

Thank you for posting a review. I am pleased that overall you enjoyed your time with us but apologise that your stay was disturbed by the noise from the street. As a city centre hotel it is very difficult for us to manage the outside noise but we do work closely with the local council and report to them any feedback from our guests. I do hope that we are able to welcome you back in the future.

When you haven't been to Lichfield before, it's quite difficult to find your way around, with the centre being pedestrianised. However, we eventually found the car park (free to guests, which is a bonus in any city centre) and were welcomed into the George by pleasant, helpful staff.

Our room (73, on the 2nd floor) was just lovely; large and characterful, with a comfy 4-poster bed being an unexpected treat. We both slept for a solid 8 hours, which is virtually unheard of in a hotel stay.

Perhaps we should have eaten elsewhere, because the food lets the hotel down. I opted for the carvery for dinner and it was edible, but not enjoyable, with dry meat and overcooked vegetables. Breakfast was decidedly below average, with very limited choice and too much reliance on tinned fruit, second rate juice, boring bread etc. There are lots of really good cafes and restaurants in Lichfield and the George should try harder to be one of them!

Having said that, we'd definitely stay here again because we loved the character and atmosphere of the hotel.

This is a lovely old hotel, and it appears to be very much the centre of the community. It is in the centre of the city, it has a lovely bar, free wifi, is clean, polite staff but.....it lacks a certain attention to detail. I feel bad about this, because I feel it may be a bit 'picky' but the breakfast didn't have any bread rolls which I think is pretty standard (it did have marmite though - very good!) and we ordered newspapers that were never delivered. Otherwise it was fine. I think what I am trying to say is that the hotel is great for folk like me who just want a nice place to stay with polite staff and that is centrally located. But if you are more demanding, if the details such as a full breakfast and having the papers you ordered delivered are really important to you, well you may be disappointed.

Had tried to book this hotel on a previous occasion, so was looking forward to our stay this time in the centre of this lovely town. Booking was made through booking.com and requested a quiet room as its located on a main street with several pubs and restaurants near by. Very pleasant hotel, warm and inviting bar area. Check in was efficient, but no information given with regard to breakfast or anything else for that matter. The public areas were clean and nicely furnished, however the room was very small and cramped, with a standard double bed which was rather soft and uncomfortable, but the room was overcrowed with furniture for the size, making it difficult to get around, especially in the dark! The decor was also quite dark which made it feel rather gloomy and overall claustrophobic. On the plus side, the restaurant was very pleasant, the staff were helpful and efficient, and the food was good. Fresh coffee was brought to the table along with toast, and a buffet selection was also available, and of a good standard.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are quiter as its situated on a main street with several bars and res...

Looked great when we walked in, old fashioned but charming. However when we were told our room was on the 2nd floor we asked for directions to the lift only to be told the lift only went to the first floor then we would have to walk. The receptionist did not seem concerned about this but luckily for us another member of staff overheard & said she would get someone to take our case up for us. The corridors were long & winding & very uneven beneath your feet!!! The room itself was a good size & comfortable. Decided to eat out in the evening so can't comment on the restaurant. The breakfast was a disappointment though - orange squash not fresh juice, no croissants.
