This is worth a look round - unfortunately they wouldn't accept the children as boarders though! A good insight into Lichfield's past

Whilst only a small (and free) attraction, thie Guildhall cells manage to evoke very effectively what is was like to be in prison in the past. Manages to provide lots of information about the prison system and some of the inmates in a very painless way!

Next time you're in Lichfield, after visiting the usual places of interest like the Cathedral and Samuel Johnson's House, take time out to experience some of the darker sides of our local history. The Guildhall Cells remain as they were over two centuries ago, dark, damp and frighteningly stark. Imagine being there without lighting, awaiting your trial at the courthouse. Punishable crimes included stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving family, such was the severity of justice in them days. One of the last people to be hanged in England was incarcerated there too I believe. Back on the streets of Lichfield, thank your lucky stars and relax with a traditional tea in one of the City's many tea shops..
