Owner description: Erasmus Darwin was one of the greatest polymaths of the 18th century. It has been said that no one since has rivaled his achievements in such a wide range of fields. Indeed, he posited a coherent theory of evolution a full 70 years before his grandson Charles. This beautiful Georgian town house and previous home of Erasmus is dedicated to his life and achievements. Set in an ancient part of Lichfield city centre, the house contains a wealth of information about this fascinating man through videos, audio guides and several hands-on exhibitions and also provides a window into Georgian life. There is also a wonderful herb garden to stroll through and a gift shop. There are plenty of activities and workshops for all ages so do check our website for various events throughout the year!

A very interesting museum and we managed to go on a day that entry was free.I feel that they could to a lot more with it however, and as much as I realise that space is limited they must improve the facilities to get the younger generations interested.

This little museum in Lichfield is most interesting to look round. Erasmus Darwin is the Grandfather of Charles Darwin but one can see where Charles Darwin drew his inspiration from. The museum is in the house where Erasmus Darwin lived and beautiful it must have been in its heyday. A most informative museum and well worth a visit. A small charge is paid on entrance, well worth it.

I knew a little bit about the grandfather of Charles Darwin before I visited the house and the fact he lay some of the foundations of the evolution theory which his grandson developed but I was very surprised to find out how multi-talented he was. Not only was he a scientist but an inventor, doctor, botanist, writer and poet whose ideas were arguably ahead of his time.

You can see some of his inventions in one room and the lady at the entrance was very helpful and informative. The short video upstairs was also very informative and a little amusing as well. Situated near the Cathedral it is certainly well worth a visit and adds another dimension to Lichfield's rich history.

If you have a rainy day in Lichfield, this a great place to visit-the home of Erasmus Darwin.
There's are interesting things to keep anyone occupied for an hour or two. He actually initiated some of the things that his grandson is known for..
Free, and there's a nice herb garden outside too.
