“Wonderful find!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

We were en-route to Leeds to see friends but it was my husband's birthday so we broke our journey at the Swinfen Hall Hotel. What a great find. The staff were so helpful. The room was well maintained and quiet. Although the hotel is just off the A38 it is well setback within its own grounds so even though it was warm and we had the window open overnight the traffic noise didn't disturb us. Every member of staff we encountered were friendly, cheerful and went that extra mile. The restaurant is superb with an excellent wine list. The grounds are lovely to walk in. Can't wait to book our next visit.

Our son got married at Swinfen and we stayed at the hotel for two nights and were lucky enough to be able to dine in their superb restaurant (which is Michelin Star standard, without the usual stuffy pretence). This hotel is in first class condition, is in a delightful secluded location, has a team of friendly and extremely helpful staff, It is absolutely worthy of a five star rating.

As a Wedding venue we were extremely pleased as they made our day very special. I would strongly recommend Swinfen to anyone.

My son got married here this past Saturday. We stayed on Friday and Saturday night.

The hotel is imposing and beautiful, approached by a long drive, set in acres of beautiful parkland, at the moment, bright with Rhododendrons. Despite it being 18th Century, it is clearly loved and cared for, all in very good order.

We arrived with a car load of things for the wedding, the staff came out immediately to help us unload the car, they had assigned a room for the wedding items. We were taken to our room the Lichfield Suite which overlooked the terrace at the back and the deer park, a large room, with a dressing area and beautiful bathroom.

We met friends for pre prandial drinks and then dinner. There are a number of beautifully furnished areas where you can have a drink, and a well stocked bar. We were given canapés and brought the menu's to peruse, having selected Quail for the starter, I could not decide on a main course, so I asked that Chef choose for me. We were taken to the lovely oak panelled dining room and assigned a round table, ideal for flowing conversation. The starters were wonderful, then arrived the main course, which was a surprise for me, Chef had chosen Beef Cheek, it was outstanding and simply melted when the knife touched it, I've had Michelin starred cuisine that wasn't as good as this was, I cannot commend the Chef and staff highly enough. Afterwards we had a selection of local cheeses.

The next day was the wedding day, the wedding and reception were to take place in the same room, the efficiency of the staff in turning the room around was second to none. The weather was very kind so we were able to have our Pimms and champagne on the terrace and in the lovely gardens in the warm sunshine.

The reception was to be a buffet, this was organised by each table being called up one at a time so we had no queues, the wine was served at the table. The food, was a simple choice, sausage and mash, chilli, chips, some cold meats and salads. Again, the kitchen had excelled themselves and the food was utterly delicious. Dessert was a chocolate mousse on a biscuit base again, outstanding.

After the reception, there was a party in the main room, but many 'quiet' rooms to choose from if you didn't want to dance.

When we went to bed, we were minding our one year old Grandson, in our absence, a cot had been erected in our room and beautifully made with children's sheets, duvets and covers.

The breakfasts were divine too and staff simply outstanding in their helpfulness, pleasantness and effort to please, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Of particular note was their proactive help around getting all done for the wedding, they ran around making sure everyone and everything was where they/it should be at the right time.

One should be aware, and is well warned, that due to the old piping, it takes a while to get any hot water through, but as long as you know, you can deal with this.

I would ask though, that some attention is paid to the PA system in the ball room, as the music distorted badly as it played, this would be my only criticism though.

Thank you Swinfen, we loved our stay, and can't wait to come again.

Room Tip: Certainly ask for a room at the back if you want the best view.

Dear Zinfandel-7

Thank you so much for the review you posted recently following your son's wedding here at Swinfen Hall Hotel. I do appreciate you taking the time to convey your thoughts in writing and I took great pleasure in reading it. It was really great to have such positive feedback - something we do not take for granted.

I am delighted that you had a great stay overall and got to experience everything Swinfen had to offer from the fine dining in The Four Seasons restaurant - I can concur that the beef is delicious, hence why Chef immediately recommended it! - to the more relaxed food on the day of the wedding.

The comments about the staff in particular were fantastic. We are very lucky to have a longstanding and loyal Management team here at Swinfen Hall Hotel, complimented by an enthusiastic part-time brigade. I will ensure all of them are made aware of your review (although in this modern era, I'm sure they already are!)

I do hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back.

Kind Regards

Everything you would need is provided for. When it is done correctly you can tell. The staff are very attentive and this gives a very relaxed working environment. Swinfen Hall is now used for regular meetings.

Had a delightful afternoon tea this rainy Saturday afternoon, it was the bank holiday weekend so we should have known better. We should have gone last week but they weren't taking bookings with a wedding on - make sure you book ahead or you could be turned away!

Sandwiches aplenty plus the added toast with pea puree and feta cheese served warm and tastes a lot nicer than it sounds. Very delicate artisan cakes and scones served with tea or coffee to top the theme off.

Very lovely setting but felt a bit too refined for our giggling party of six ladies. It's a shame the weather wasn't on our side as the grounds are lovely and it would have been nicer to have been seated on the terrace.
