My parents held their 50th wedding anniversary celebration meal at the hotel restaurant. The maitre d' was attentive and helpful. The staff were well organised, charming and obliging. The meal was out of this world. Not massive portions but four courses was more than filling. I can heartily recommend the assiette of desserts including the chocolate mousse.

We chose the Swan for its central location and competitive price - a little more than the bulk standard Holiday Inn just off the M6, but breakfast thrown in.

Its a very old building so the layout was quirky, and the room, although of an adequate size had a tiny window. Noise seems to travel and we were interrupted during the night by TV in a nearby room and a couple of people having a conversation. Plenty of parking which is pay and display, but you get a voucher to display from reception if you are staying. Not 100% happy about the cleanliness of the place as the carpets appeared filthy. They made the mistake of carpeting the sides of the lift with the same carpet so you could see what colour they were supposed to be!

Dinner was excellent and competitively priced. Breakfast was fine. Service in both cases was OK, but sometimes not very attentive. Staff were invariably friendly, but levels of service were hit and miss. eg we had to wait 10 minutes to check out as the receptionist had 'disappeared'.

We stayed on a Saturday night and the bar was extremely busy, so much so that they had two bouncers on the door. Not the place for a nice quiet after dinner drink, but this may just be a feature of Saturday night.

All in all a reasonable experience and I would not rule out staying here again - but maybe give Saturday night a miss.

We had a very large room with a four poster bed. A shame that the curtains on the bed did not close very far, thus making the idea of a four poster a bit useless. The whole staff treated us as if we were special especially the cheery girl on reception and the man who served us with breakfast.

We have stayed at the Swan a few times before and have dined there quite often. I agree with some comments about the varying quality of service and food, but on this visit we could not fault anything. (Do check the food bill though as a mistake was made).

Stayed for one night in January. Great location in the main street. There is ample parking behind the hotel. Staff were really friendly, especially at Breakfast. The rooms were great - flat screen TV / tea and coffee / large bathroom with nice toiletries.
Hotel catering facilties are excellent - coffee shop, basserie serving pizzas etc and a restaurant.
My only negative was that my room was at the front of the hotel, and it was very noisy when students left their night clubs and bars to walk home! Apparently Tuesday is student night in town!
Overall, loved the hotel, and have re-booked for another visit in February.

I booked the Swan to meet up with friends and have a good meal. The hotel has a lovely brasserie and very lively bar which were ideal for what we wanted.

The rooms that we had were all large compared to other hotels I've stayed in. Mine had a dressing area between the main room and ensuite. The hotel has been recently refurbished so it is contemporary but still retains the old character in the beams, windows, etc. There are flat screen tvs on the wall, and a mini bar which was full of organic local selections (cider, beer, biscuits, etc) which I thought was well priced. Tea and biscuits were left in the room and the biscuits were delicious!

Even though it was Christmas party season, we were still able to order food from the a la carte menu and it was all really good - none of us were disappointed with what we ordered. There was also a good selection of wines to choose from.

There is a large patio area outside which probably gets lively in the summer. There is limited parking behind the hotel - make sure you get a permit because it now operates as a pay and display car park which is a bit of a pain. I parked on the road and had to move my car by 9 am which again was a slight inconvenience. Breakfast wasn't as good a quality as the evening meal, but it was fine.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel if you want somewhere to stay and enjoy a good meal, lively bar, etc. Perfect for catching up with friends.

  • Liked — The Brasserie and the biscuits in the room!
  • Disliked — The hotel car park can be used by anyone as pay and display which makes it hard to park

Stayed one night on business and it was very comfortable, the lounge area is well spaced out with a seperate wine bar with big leather sofas which is nice. There is wireless but its very expensive. The food at the hotel was top notch, really good if not the best I have had in a hotel yet. The bar also had a good selection of draft beers ;-) Plus there is a good outdoor sitting area.

The rooms were large, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was a bit pokey but had a nice shower, well presented and clean.

Parking is a bit of a pain as the central location makes the car park a bit pokey, plus you have to pay and then claim the money back at reception which is a bit illogical (why cant they just issue you with a pass or something).

I'll be staying here next time I'm in Stafford as have stayed in some shocking hotels around here before.
