“Not bad I suppose!”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

Just got back from a weekend away in Stoke. Stayed at The North Stafford Hotel. I'd read the reviews after we'd booked so I wasn't expecting much. Hotel has a lot of character. Bed was very comfortable. The place definately needs some tlc though. The reception staff were pleasant. We'd asked for a travel cot to be in the room for our toddler, and it was there on arrival and made up for him. We had a nice view from our window (room 211). I think it definately needs updating though, windows are falling apart. Overall...we were there just to sleep and we slept well as the bed was very big and comfy :-). Also, very handy for the train station!

Room Tip: Room 211 was good for us!

I booked this hotel through another site to stay in while visiting Alton Towers. I arrived cold, wet and very tired, the check in was very easy. I ws even advised they had two weddings that night butthe music would stop at 12.30, which it did. On our way to our room we nticed the decor is a bit tired in places, but we were pleasantly surprised to kind our room was very roomy and equiped to a standard beyond budget chains. If there was any down side to the room it was the hand basin being in the room due to the size of the ensuite. However that again offered both bath or shower.
We found every member of staff we dealt with during our stay to be a credit to the hotel. The food was of a very good standard and the prices were fantasic value.
I will certainly be revisiting this hotel on future trips to the area.

Had to pay extra for parking. Room smelt dusty and old but the basics were clean, the decor is falling to bits but for the price can't complain too much. Breakfast was good, help yourself setup, but a staff member interrupted us not to ask if everything was ok but to ask me if I was finished and took my plate while there was still food on my plate and my partner was still eating. If the staff smiled more the place might be charming but it just came across run down.

Really enjoyed our stay here yes it is a bit tired and old and needs work in the rooms but it adds to the charm, just don't go expecting the ritz. What we paid was excellent value for money and it also included a fab buffet breakfast with a great toast machine lol which has been the talk of our stay since we got back. It is also close to city centre and Greg and his staff were charming and we cant wait to go back for another night out in Hanley,

I arrived at your hotel in Stafford at 9am on the day of our booking.
Booked in, ordered parking at an extra cost of £3 and asked for late
check out. We picked up our tickets for Alton Towers and left for the
day.

We Arrived later that evening at approximately 11pm. Asked reception
for our key to room 120 to which he replied you will be lucky we are
full tonight. I explained that I had already booked in and eventually
he found my paperwork. Gave me the key. I explained I had requested
parking and can't find any parking space around the back. He replied
we have wedding reception and to park out the front of the hotel. Not
impressed if you have booked parking it should be available for you.

We then went up to our room that was above the function rooms and
could hardly hear ourselves talk,

The room was a disgrace, wallpaper was falling of the walls, there
were watermarks running down the wallpaper so it was all patchy. There
was mould around both windows as well as on all the tiles in the
bathroom. the carpets had dark patches in the corners again damp and
mouldy. The curtains were filthy and the cupboard was falling apart
with the shelf lying at the bottom of the cupboard. The room was very
dusty. The bed headboard didn't fit the bed it was too small. The beds
base wasn't even joined together and the mattress you could feel all
the springs. It looked like a second hand bed that had been shoved
into the room. The bin in the bathroom was dirty and broken and there
was sick or dirt by the toilet.

We took photos of all this (some of them attached) and went downstairs
to see the manager Greg.

On arrival at reception the male receptionist (whose shirt was not
ironed) was saying he is going to write to head office to complain
about the company and the state of some of the rooms. Greg then
arrived and showed him the photos and asked if this room is fit for
purpose to which he replied that the hotel was fully booked as were
all the rooms in the surrounding hotels and we had no choice but to
stay there.

We had been traveling since 5am spent the day and evening at Alton
Towers. We were tired, it was now midnight. my girlfriend was now
shaking and in tears. we had planned this for a while and she was very
upset by the room.

The room was shocking, there is no way this should have been given to
us. It was not fit for purpose and there is no way anyone can sleep in
it unless they were drunk and couldn't see properly.

We decided to go back upstairs we then phoned around and found another
hotel 20 miles away the holiday inn on the M6 junction 13.

We went back downstairs and told Greg to refund our money and that we
had found another hotel. He refunded the money.

We have never had such bad service from staff at a hotel, I have never
seen a hotel room in that condition. It ruined our whole weekend. we
didn't get to sleep until nearly 2am because of your hotels staff
incompetence, not once did they try or offer any help.

We have many more photos if you would like to see them.

Your website does not show any of this and is false advertising, I'm
very upset by the whole experience and want compensating for this or I
will take this further.

I await your response.

i booked 2 superior rooms with fruit and water in the rooms on arrival for 2 nights stay with 2 day tickets for alton towers. when we arrived no fruit or water in any of the rooms the rooms were not superior when i went to complain i got told there was an error on the internet about the fruit and water and not all rooms are the same size as this is a 150 year hotel. the rooms were tiny double bed rooms with no space. the bathroom taps were rusty and the shower was the same. the rooms had a damp smell to them. i would say breakfast was nice. you don't get tickets for alton towers you get a bit of paper and when you get to alto towers have to queue for your tickets (an hour). won't be stopping here again

After reading the other reviews we were not sure what to expect. First of all the rooms are very old and tired but kept clean and fresh and the management and staff are so welcoming and friendly and with a great breakfast this hotel is great value for city centre. Greg who is the manager of this old lady is very hospitable and runs this hotel like clockwork. It would nice to see Britannia Hotels spend some money to upgrade the rooms as this is the only area that lets it down but with such nice staff you can see pass this. So come on Britannia spend some money because you have a great team and make this the no 1 hotel in the area
