Booked through a travel agent even after reading the bad reviews but though it would be ok. We were given a free upgrade before we arrived as it was pretty quiet. We arrived and the room was cold, dark and cramped. It was cold because the window had been left open, close the window and you realise it was left open because the room smells damp. I would hate to think what the standard double is like. The hotel itself is not in good condition with signs of damp on the stairs and in the rooms. My girlfriend booked the hotel as a treat for my birthday but it was all very depressing, not what we were after. I'm not sure who wrote the positive reviews of this hotel. The local travellodge/stop inn will give you a nicer room for a lot less.

Our booking was through a late bookings website.
No evidence of our booking could be found at reception on arrival so we were asked to wait in the (smoky) lounge. The duty manager, eventually came to advise us there was no room available due to a ‘leak’. There had been no attempt to contact us during the day and no effort had been made to find alternative accomodation, in fact the DM was not going to do anything, just leave us in such a predicament.
It was only at our insistance that the DM reluctantly agreed to call some local hotels and write a letter of explanation so a refund could be obtained from ‘Late Bookings' website.
The DM returned to say he was unable to locate a room in Stoke. It appeared 2 only hotels had been called so we requested further attempts. Eventually a room was found in a B&B just outside Stoke but it had not been booked or paid for. We therefore requested the phone number and he went off to get the number but never returned !

We eventually gave up, got the number ourselves, and left the hotel. It was by then 20:45 and we were very tired and hungry. We found somewhere to eat and went home with our weekend ruined.

I was appalled that the North Stafford hotel thought it acceptable to leave two women stranded with no accommodation.

I felt I had to write a review on here after reading all the others.

I booked to stay here for 2 nights while I took the bf to Alton Towers for his birthday treat. You can imagine my panic and horror when I read the dreadful reviews AFTER I'd booked to stay here. I tried to change the hotel but was told by the seperate travel website that it wouldn't be possible so I thought "we'll grin and bear it".

We arrived somewhat apprehensive and was greeted by a friendly receptionist who was extremely helpful and booked our table for dinner. Our room looked quite newly decorated and was completely adequate and most importantly - clean. We weren't expecting too much, we'd only booked a base to come back to and collapse after Alton Towers and we were pleasantly surprised. All the staff were helpful, the food ok and we had no noise at all outside the room. In fact I slept extremely well indeed.

So I would recommend this hotel to people looking for somewhere affordable to stay as a base while you're in and around Stoke.

We booked online for 5 nights. When we arrived we were asked to pay which we did with our visa and we were shown to a very small old room, not refurbished, with a scruffy dark dirty bedspread. We went down to reception. We picked up their brochure which read "all are rooms are refurbished to a high standard.... So when the receptionist enquired was all ok we said no not really we dont like our room. A "manager" came and showed us 4 other rooms all pretty much the same as ours and after showing him the brochure he said "that paragraph regarding refurbishment applies to many hotels of this chain but all our rooms are the same here for £45.00 a night". Anyway we chose another room slightly bigger. When we arrived back into the room that night the room was unbearably hot and because the thermostatic valve was broken off we could not turn down the radiator. We called the desk to tell them but no one came. My husband went down to reception and was told another "manager" (who was actually a maintenance man) would come to him. He went out to his van and gave my husband the tools to do it himslef! Luckily my husband has a central heating business. We are wondering whether to send the hotel a bill!! After taking back the tools he asked the receptionist to have our bill ready in the morning and said we would not be eating breakfast (we had heard in one day from two people not to eat there). the next morning we were handed a visa refund for the whole amount.
After having three hotels ourselves in the past which were rated by the Tourist Board and kept to their standard I can honestly say that this hotel has "completely gone to the dogs". I wonder if it has any rating at all, as it would not come up to a 2 diamond.
It had once been the place to stay years ago and had a good reputation but now it wants knocking down and starting again.

Booked for one night.

Only paid £45 for a double room, bed and breakfast.

Arrived and checked in and the receptionist was very polite. Looks quite nice from reception, and its obviouysly a new carpet.....but as you go up the stairs, the new carpet ends and the old carpet is really dingy and threadbare!

We stayed in room 110. It was ok - bit of a damp smell but it was bearable. Bit old fashioned and the bed squeeked so badly!!! Even a tiny movement made the bed squeek so loud it kept waking us both up.

Bathroom was nice - must had just been redone, and had a nige big jacuzzi bath - although i only had time for a shower : (

Towels and bedding were all clean, but the carpet has seen much better days, and the remote control didnt work for the tv.

We didnt have any problems with noise (apart from the squeeky bed!), probably as it was a monday night!

We arrived at 9.30pm and it looked like the restaurant was closed. So, we hopped in the car and drove around for 30 mins looking for somewhere nice to eat - and ended up in the subway next door!

I ate breakfast, which was ok but i went down at 9am and it had obviously been sat there for a few hours, but it was actually ok.

When we went to check out at 9.15am we waited for 5 minutes but nobody came to the front desk, so we just left the keys on the counter as we couldnt wait any longer.

Overall - we didnt have any particularly bad experiences......but this hotel is not 'luxury'. It was reasonable for the money - £45 for two people with bed and breakfast.

Probably wouldnt stay here again out of choice, but wouldnt purposefully avoid it either.

  • Liked — Price!
  • Disliked — Decor is dated and carpet could have been cleaner. Location seems a bit dodgy.....

I was alarmed at the reviews I had read but was pleasantly surprised by the size of our room and bathroom. The only annoyance was some over exhuberant children running up and down the corridors late at night, but I suppose you would expect this in halfterm week. The food was good, we had the evening meal which was very popular and breakfast. Keep an open mind when you read reviews of this hotel, we were well looked after.
