“Unorganised and chaos ”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014 via mobile

Me and my husband choose to dine here on Friday night after family had our children over night so we were looking forward to our meal. Booked a table to be told no table reserved so we just picked an empty table and sat down. Ordered our food and starter came quick and was nice, young waitress was stood about tables needed clearing, glasses collecting and she wasent interested. Then the chaos started, people complaining still hadent had their food yet, a group of 8 people walked out without desserts as didn't have the time to wait for them, people were geting they main meals before us and we ordered way before these people. A family with 2 young children hadent even had they main meal and the children had eaten theirs bout an hour brier that in the end they walked out with a refund. Couple next to us sent good back as children wasent cooked and RECIEVED a refund, our food finally came 2 and half hours after ordering it and it was nice but not enjoyable as a party had arrived for a 30th anniversary to set up and couldn't as general public including ourselfs were still eating our food, geting looks off them as to why we were sat here. Here people talking saying should of had room empty by 7 and when I rang up I was not told a party was even on. Felt sport for the couple who's party it was as I would of felt the same expecting to set up banners bolloons etc and couldn't. Dj cudent set up and had to wait at bar as a group of 6 were eating still where he needed to be. We complained and RECIEVED a refund aswel but the whole experience was discussing and the young waitress was geting it all as no managers around. Won't be going back for food in a hurry.

“Shambolic!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 August 2014

We booked the Penny Black for our 30th anniversary party is it’s been our local for a number of years and we know the food to be first class.
We were told that the room would be ours from 7 o’clock so had guests turning up by 7:30. There were no notices posted saying that the lounge would be closed for a private party and the bar staff were still taking orders for food from the general public up until 7:15.
The last of the uninvited didn't leave the lounge until after 9:00 so there were a number of tables ours guests couldn't use and had to stand at the bar waiting for seats.
The DJ was unable to set up as the area he normally uses was occupied by a table of six people who were the last to be served their meals at 8:40
I telephoned Paul the manager who couldn't have seemed less interested and put the blame on the bar staff! He even denied ever having spoken to us about the booking (Paul, if you are reading this I have the phone bill to show the two occasions my wife rang you to arrange the evening)
So if you are considering booking anywhere for a special occasion and hoping for a stress free evening then I would suggest that you look somewhere else rather than The Penny Black in Hartburn!

“Never seen such chaos”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

Dined at the Penny Black the same night as the previous review, arrived at 6pm to be told our booking wasn't on record and to find a free table. Sat next to a couple who were told the same, went to get a round in and a party of 6 were told they had no record of their booking. Starters were nice and my main was enjoyable until I saw my partners undercooked chicken. That was us done for the night. Young waitress took the food away and came back with an apology and the offer of a free drink as there was no chicken left. Politely declined this offer, couple sat next to us watched main after main come out to orders placed long after theirs to be then told the chef hadn't started on theirs yet. There was a guy whose family had all finished their meals and he was still waiting on his. The night descended into absolute chaos with diners giggling amongst each other about what was going on, must apologise to the lady who waited a long time for her Eton mess to be told they had no cream to make it but that was the nights particular highlight for me. There must have been a major staffing issue in terms of numbers and quality, management hid behind waitresses. Not all bad though we were offered a free meal at their sister pub the Londonderry arms which is infinitely better.

“Bad service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014 via mobile

Ordered 3 parmos, but 90 minutes and two pints of lager later, no meals. Whilst waiting, meals were going back, one persons meal with foreign body, and one couples meal given to someone else after long wait. After 90 minutes wait, left our drinks, got money back and left.....well done penny black, spoilt our evening.
