“Great drinking in the summer, but don't eat there!”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

(I didn't stay so can't speak for the rooms.)Years ago I enjoyed many a good night drinking in the summer sun. But sadly that is all the pub is good for! The food is tasteless and over cooked. One server used their thumb to hold the fish on the plate. We had over cooked chips, greasy over cooked scampi, the trout was very poor. The beer was good so if you want a drink go there if you want to eat don't,

As there were going to be around sixteen of us I thought it best to make a reservation. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The food was a good pub standard at a very reasonable price. For those of the party who liked real ale there was a good selection including Adnams'( the local brewery) My wife had the house white wine which she assured me was not bad. All in all it was a good experience, and everyone had a great time.

Visited Ye Olde Cross Keys for a quiet weekend for our wedding anniversary in January, and actually found it great then. The weather certainly helped - Aldeburgh could probably be pretty miserable with a North or East wind. It's a pub with food and rooms rather than a hotel, but the room was well appointed, though I could understand if it would be noisy in the summer with the courtyard right outside. Dinner and breakfast both good and very obliging - local seafood was good too - particularly the sprats as a starter. Don't try going up the stairs (or down them) with two suitcases - they are a bit narrow, but the place certainly has character. This place was actually recommended to us for a winter weekend and it served its purpose very nicely.

Room Tip: Double room with the sea view is a very nice room with a four poster bed - BUT it is overlooking the...

We arrived in aldebough at lunchtime my husband saying i.m going to have a drink.....
I met up with him half an later in the Cross Keys ... as i entered this drab smelly place
i saw my husband sat by the door ....." This place is awful" was my first response...
I glanced round to see an old chap who was having a problems trying to stay on his barstool
talking to a barman who had the look of someone who was not happy to see joe public coming in the door..... I did not bother with a drink having paid a visit to the ladies and passing to very drunk women we left ....
This public house is not the sort of place you expect to find on Adleburgh front.......
..Also my husband left half his drink stating it tasted foul!!!!!!

Didn't stay so can't vouch for the rooms but if they're in any way like the food, stay away. Nice location next to the beach but that's all there is to recommend it. One of those places where it seems that the landlord and staff have found themselves running a pub by mistake and it's all your fault that you've turned up looking for food and a drink. So, studiously unfriendly service and the food- wow. My "cheddar cheese open sandwich" was at least honestly billed. And that's all it was, a bit of bread with cheap cheddar cheese grated on top. And a few bits of tired salad on the side. It was the kind of food a 12 year old who has been left to fend for themselves while they're parent's are away for the weekend would make. Avoid this place.

this pub was mentioned in a booklet entitled "a quiet pint". this meant it had no music but did not mention the din made by drinkers/diners until gone 1 a.m. in the courtyard outside the bedroom windows. we had booked for 2 nights but only stayed one partly from lack of sleep and partly from the total disinterest shown by the staff from the moment we arrived. the person we saw on arrival was surly to the point of rudeness and we received little help or advice about such basics as eating on a sunday evening or even parking the car which is a serious problem in Aldebrough. we will not be returning.

The room would be heaven for pine lovers with oversized furniture claiming almost all the floor space. The room did have a view of the sea over the pub garden which despite being pre-warned by the landlady that this could be noisy created no issues. Being only a few steps away from the bar below the smell of fried food in the morning soon permeated the room. The bar is very much a locals pub with no frills and so we decided that it was not a place to sit and enjoy a relaxed breakfast and went to one of the cafes further up the sea front.

If you require somewhere non-celubrious to sleep The Olde Cross Keys will do the job - however at almost £90 for the room I would say there are probably better options available. We stayed over a bank holiday and all other options in Aldeburgh were already taken! Annoyingly.
