“Lovely Location, Stylish and Friendly Hotel”
Reviewed 11 May 2011

We came up for a formal dinner and decided to stay overnight. The hotel has been revamped since I last stayed, and has became very stylish throughout. All the staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. And they looked happy working here - always a good sign in a hotel. Our room was elegantly decorated, and with good bathroom fittings etc. Breakfast was very good, and we had a second pot of coffee outside to enjoy the beautiful views from their terrace.

For chilling out there are lounges with lovely sea views as well as the Terrace. Standard room rates are quite high, but not silly given the quality of the place. But some of their special rates are excellent value for a place that has such a "feel good" factor. I have given 5 stars to represent the "funky style" of the hotel rather than an indication of 5 star "plushness". Parking is a little limited, and next time we wil bring our smaller car, as the spaces can be quite tight!

I have done a separate review of our dinner in the restaurant, rather than hotel, section of tripadvisor.

Having got rather fed up with the wedding we decided on a bank holiday trip to suffolk and chose the Brudenell in Aldeburgh Suffolk. What a lovely find it was. We were greeted by very helpful and professional staff and allocated a very clean, spacious room on the 3rd floor overlooking the marshes. At all times we found the staff in the hotel were obliging and only too pleased to assist. An excellent atmosphere despite a very busy weekend. The food was very good and the views across the north sea from the restaurant fantastic. In better weather guests can dine outside. A hotel we will return to - excellent

We were impressed from the start. The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was good and the public rooms had lovely views across the sea. Best of all, the beds were really comfortable and we slept like babes.
Aldeburgh is a very pretty town and the surrounding area is beautiful.

Don't be put off by the back entrance to the hotel. You climb the stairs to reception and get a wonderful view of the sea - almost like you are on a cruise liner! V friendly check-in and we had a sea view room. Spacious, nicely decorated in neutrals. Would have preferred a slouchy sofa to sit and watch the sea rather than two upright bucket chairs but we didn't spend much time in the room as the weather was so nice. We booked dinner, B&B as the website stated the restaurant had 2 rosettes. Drinks and our menu choice were taken at the busy bar. If they are going to have a wine from India on the wine list then it would be a good idea for the head barman to be able to talk about it - he hadn't tasted it so we weren't going to take a chance.
Onto our table. My seafood pasta starter looked good but was completely tasteless. One chunk of salmon plonked on top of linguine with one small mussel mixed in - oh for a squeeze of lemon to make it taste of something. My main course was halibut with caper risotto which again was tasteless. The fish was ok but the risotto was completely tasteless despite having capers in it. The portion was also quite small so I was ready for dessert. The dessert menu was centred around fruit themes - great - I asked if the peach were fresh and was told yes. Dessert beautifully presented - small tasters of peach tart tatin, peach crumble and peach mousse. The peach had no taste - maybe my fault for choosing peaches out of season but if it's on the menu it should be tasty! The restaurant did not deserve one rosette let alone two.
Good night's sleep in v comfy bed.
Breakfast was v good with friendly waitress. The scrambled egg was v good with a huge portion of smoked salmon - too much in fact.
The hotel does seem to be plagued by harvest flies (in April?) so they keep the windows and doors closed which makes the public rooms hot. We had not noticed any until the waitress told us about them as we sat down for dinner!
The Brudenell is in a great spot in lovely Aldeburgh. The decor is clean and modern and the staff are friendly. We'd stay there again but definitely would find somewhere else for dinner.

We booked a last minute deal, so got a very good price for one night in a non sea facing double room.
The room was fine - clean and light. Heat might be an issue in the height of summer as the window would only open a little.
The double rooms are compact, but you still have wardrobe, bedside tables, two small easy chairs and a little table, desk and TV. Good supply of tea and coffeee for the kettle. reasonably sizes and stylish bathroom, with good sized bath and shower.
We did not eat in as we went out to the cinema.
Breakfast the next morning was very good wtih a selection of hot dishes and the usual cold stuff including yoghurt and cereal and fresh orange juice.
The setting is superb, almost on the beach and you can walk the coast past the tinkle of the boats.
Parking could be an issue. We parked at the front of the hotel and we had to reverse to get out.

Having stayed at the 'Bru' several times, I was disappointed with my visit last weekend. The room was hot and stuffy and staff at the bar downstairs ignored us and other customers when ordering. Despite refurbishment last year, the hotel and staffing are still not up to the standard you would expect , especially considering the prices that the hotel charges to stay there. It really isn't value for money and the owners should not simply trade on its location when justifying the service and facilities offered.
If you're looking for a hotel, consider staying slightly out of town and driving in when you want the beach. I shall next time I visit the area.
