“Standards Slipping”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

We live locally and have been regular visitors to the Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop over the years. My husband first started coming with his grandfather nearly fifty years ago.
However we have noticed over the last year that the quality is not what it was and that it is a bit hit and miss depending on the day you come.
We queued for nearly an hour on Friday night August 23rd-not a problem as the wait is mostly worthwhile-but sadly we were very disappointed.
The scampi was overcooked and the chips were undercooked and greasy. The cod was mediocre. Unfortunately my husband had severe indigestion within a few minutes of eating and felt very unwell.
We will not be in a rush to return unless standards improve and will be exploring other local options.

“Best fish and chips in Aldeburgh?”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

Very well known fish and chips establishment with long queues each night during peak season. Very good value and the scampi and chips is highly recommended!

“Trading on it's former excellent reputation!”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Sorry - but this place has just become complacent and has let it's standards drop considerably!...we live about 20 miles away and have visited quite a few times since moving here 9 years ago from London - the hype surrounding both of the establishments in Aldeburgh (this and the Golden Galleon up the road) does not pass muster anymore!......quality of fish may be fine but the cooking methods leave a lot to be desired!....we queued up to today for 55 mins today (admittedly just for chips today and a battered sausage!)....the chips were undercooked and soggy and some of them were just small sharp bits that get left at the bottom of the fryer!...I defy you to say you use local potatoes as these were obviously just third rate frozen potatoes!....cheap sausages served in a greasy batter too!.....we left most of ours in the bin and went to The Cross Keys where we overheard some people saying they got fed up of queuing !....They ordered fish and chips in the pub and when they came up they were far superior to yours - chips that looked like chips (not scratchings!) and beautiful looking fish ....we know where we will be going next time we come to Aldeburgh!.......Come on you lot!....you need to buck up and stop taking one out of the unsuspecting public!.....you can't just hide behind your past reputation!........

“Get and eat by the seaside”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

Hmmmm. We had our fish and chips at the Golden Galleon - the blue building that's before you get to the main fish and chips shop by the White Hart (they are sister shops so you would expect the same level of quality between them).

Chips cooked in beef fat - very nice, perhaps a little fatty (yes, by chip standards). The fish was a real disappointment - overcooked, and lacking in that light, almost translucent quality you get from really well cooked, fresh fish. Personally I can name many other chippies where I've had better fish and I don't quite 'get' the praise heaped on these two chippies, but I also wouldn't deny quickly marching your fish and chips to the gloriously British Aldeburgh beach is a lovely thing to do. I just think there is room for a higher standard here.
