....but now merely average, the OCB appears to have become stuck in a time warp.

I first visited the Cannon some 13 years ago and back then it was a friendly, buzzing pub with excellent food and perfectly brewed real ales.

Have been a 'regular' ever since but have witnessed a steady decline over the past 5 years.

Now, only the excellent ales remain but gone is the atmosphere and lovely food and in their place is a tired menu, uninspiring surroundings and regulars comprising of tweed jacketed teachers, upturned collar wearing rugby types and the dreaded estate agent fraternity.

Had supper here with a colleague on a recent business trip to BSE.
I'd eaten here before and am pleased to say it was as good as I remember. Staff are really great and were happy to give me a few tasters when I couldn't decide which beer I wanted. Good value and nice atmosphere.

As a place to stay the Old Cannon’s USP is that you don’t have far to go to bed after a pint or three of Gunner’s Daughter or some of their good food (we dined elsewhere but have eaten well here on a number of occasions).

But for this attribute I think that my mark would have been average except for the friendly and efficient service at the bar and breakfast. The room was good enough but lacked the bit of wow that we expect for a B&B charging this much. Certainly the duvets were far too heavy even for a cool Summer’s night. Breakfast was OK but didn’t stand out with the exception of Stokes’s Sauces and the Best Bitter Marmalade.

As hinted above a bit pricey for what it is though, in their defence, you can pay an awful lot more in Bury.

To end on a positive, no problems with noise in an upstairs room even though it was Friday night.

Booked in for lunch, on a busy Saturday, we were greeted warmly and felt welcome. A superb lunch followed. Good quality ingredients, well cooked and all washed down with a pint or two brewed on site. I can recommend 'Gunners Daughter'. The Old Cannon's brewery is worth seeing. an exceptional pub and a gem in the quiet setting of Bury's backstreets. Thank you to all for such a good dining (and drinking) experience! We will be back.

I stayed at the old cannon brewery for one night on the 20th April with a friend, we booked two single rooms via there web site. I arrived just after 11am and was given the key to my room straight away to my room while I waited for my friend to arrive. The staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome and at home.
The rooms are clean and adequate, the food & beer is very good with a large amount brewed on the premises.
Having read some of the other negative reviews I would like to say these do not show the true quality of the hotel, pub or the staff including the owner.
I would recommend the old cannon brewery if you are looking for somewhere stay. It's location is very good being just outside the town centre in a residential area, it's about 5 minutes from the train station and about a 10 minute walk to the centre of the town.

We spent one night at the Old Cannon Brewery over the Easter bank holiday. This Inn is grossly overpriced. The room was very basic and even though it was decently clean it was far from spotless. For 110 GBP per double room per night we would have expected more. The bathroom would have made the delights of a plumber: The sink and the shower drain were clogged to the point of overflowing from a single hand wash or a quick shower without hair washing or ladies grooming. We would have told the staff but we noticed the sink clogging late at bed time and the shower the morning after just before leaving. The staff were not particularly helpful. We wanted to try their own brews. Their locally brewed ales are worth tasting but the menu was not eye catching and the staff was not particularly warm so we decided to try and eat just opposite at the Pea Porridge -see review for further info. Overall, pricey and probably not worth more than 70 GBP per double room per night. Good ales available as a tasting trio.

Room Tip: Just do not stay here.

A really double edged sword experience, our table for four was booked two weeks in advance, we arrived fifteen minutes before the booked time. As we looked at the excellent menu, we were told there would be a 'delay' before the order could be put through, when asked why that was the case, we were told 'its because we are busy, and the group before you were late' ok, so at least they told us of the delay, we were told 20 -30 minutes delay, not ideal , but not the end of the world. But after waiting 50 minutes, our generosity was starting to wear thin, then a starter hove in to view ! But only briefly, it was then whisked away again ! Some frantic discussion between the staff, the starter then re-appeared , which was delicious. The staff were now getting a bit twitchy,as we're we, the manager sat two tables away drinking with friends, he didn't appear to think this was a problem despite the staff voicing our growing annoyance at their lack of concern. Having voiced our dissatisfaction, we were offered free drinks, ok you might say they made an effort to address their lack of ability to cope. But the managements complete disinterest in trying to address the situation was somewhat disappointing, I have to say they are blessed with good staff , who far exceed the service their managers offer. This is the third ( and last) time we have eaten here, and on all three occasions something has gone wrong. They really need to make their minds up what they want to be, at the moment they are falling between many stalls. A case of a little too much greed ( if you can't cope with large groups, don't accept bookings from them) its a shame because the food was pretty good, and the staff try hard to make up for the poor management they have to serve under.
