“Quaint, Quirky, Home-from-Home B&B”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

I stayed here a couple of weekends ago with my rather large family and what a lovely little B&B this is. Beautifully located in the hub of the gorgeous town, Bury St Edmunds, the couple who run the hotel have obviously really thought about the minor details which make a hotel stay really pleasant, and they were very welcoming.
We stayed in the family suite, which had 2 double beds in an open-plan style adjoining room - the kids loved it. We all slept very comfortably (nice quality bedding), the shower was good, there were tea & coffee facilities, iron & ironing board, and the restaurant served us a lovely fresh full English Breakfast (kids loved the croissants and continental breakfast bar!) When my 6 year old daughter asked if they had any nutella chocolate spread, the lady even got some out of her own kitchen for us to use... now that's a personal service!
Would definitely return. Very sweet, clean, tidy, traditional but really well-refurbished hotel.

Room Tip: If you can afford the extra space, or have children, go for the family suite!

We stayed for one night in a twin room at the Chantry last weekend. The hotel itself is situated on a quiet road only a minute or twos walk from the centre. It is tastefully furnished and bright and clean with a private car park for residents. We were greeted by a friendly couple who offered us refreshments on our arrival as our bags were taken up to our room. The room itself had lovely comfortable beds and was perfect for our stay with the only drawback being that it was up a rather narrow winding stair which could prove troublesome to those with mobility problems. Our room had a hairdryer, iron and ironing board as well as the complimentary teas and coffees, although I have to say I was surprised that there was no complimentary toilettries. I appreciate none are advertised but a small hand soap wouldn't go amiss, bearing in mind that everything else is so well thought through. Breakfast was excellent with a good variety of options and the staff are very attentive. All in all I would highly recommend the Chantry and will definitely book again.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems just make sure you are not put on the top floor.

We stayed at this hotel on 27th April for a family get together in Bury. We have previously stayed here approximately 5 years ago and had enjoyed our visit so booked again and we were not dissappointed. We were greeted by a very friendly young man on reception (sorry- don't know his name). Our room was lovely - a superior double. Good quality bed linen and bath towels. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower excellent. Breakfast was tasty and a good choice. Would definately stay here again and would recommend it to others. As mentioned before there is a very steep, old stair case up to some of the rooms so if you have mobilty problems request a room on a lower floor. We didn't actually think the hotel was too expensive. It was actually cheaper than some of the other places we looked at.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the chantry last week. I stayed for two nights in a superior double, (room 10) it was an great room with a beautiful antique bed large flat screen tv and sofa. The en suite had a very powerful shower and extremely clean.

The breakfast was very tasty with locally sourced produce. There was a choice of continental and/or a superbly cooked breakfast.

One parking space is allocated for each room which is very handy for such a central hotel. Only a few minutes walk to town centre, and abbey gardens.

Will happily return

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor are quieter, although stairs can be a little steep for some... Choose superior do...

Make no mistake this is a nice bed and breakfast venue. However it falls down on attention to detail. My partner and I had two nights last week in a "superior " room( no 5 ). The room was comfortable with a bath and shower, comfy bed etc; other than that it was just ok. A double bed with only one bedside locker! Doors to the wardrobe that will not close, a little noisy ( ventilation from kitchen??). Once again breakfast was uninspired and a very big disappointment to me. I know this is a personal thing so that is just my viewpoint but it was only ok in my opinion. The staff were friendly enough and all in all I think I would rebook as it is very handy for the town and the car park is equipped with a place for a car for each room so no worries about having nowhere to park. Nothing wrong with this place at all but lack of attention to details and expensive.

We stayed in this hotel for just one night but it was a really pleasure.
It is a very old building so the stairs to our room were very steep but no the less manageable even after a few beers. The staff were young and very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. After hours you let yourself in the front door with a key but it was all explained clearly. The hotel is very conveniently located a short work from the very pretty and interesting town and very close to the cathedral and ruined abbey. It is also bang next to the Green King brewery, we could see their yard from our bathroom window. The breakfast was a real delight, all beautifully cooked, quickly served and nothing too much trouble. Would definately stay again.

Room Tip: We were in room 14 which was very small but none the less pleasant.

A group of us stayed at The Chantry Saturday 27th April for 1 night. There was plenty of room to park our bikes approx. 6 Harley Davidsons in a secure car park at the back of the hotel. We was made to feel very welcome and when the keys had been issued to our group we was introduced to the managers who expained about the times for breakfast and the procedure for the late night entry back into the Hotel!
Our room was delightful (Room 10).Very clean comfy bed and tea/coffee making facilities. I loved the little basket under the tele with an extension lead, iron and HairDryer. It is so annoying in a hotel room when the wall socket is not close enough to the mirror for drying your hair!
We had arranged to meet up in the Green King Brewery for a guided tour. This is 2 mins down the road from the hotel - you could not have missed us as we were dressed as pirates!
It is very convenient for visiting all the sights in Bury St Edmund, which is a very pretty town.
The breakfast was superb and nothing was too much bother for the people serving us. I particulary loved the sausages which were quiet spicy.
We packed our bikes and was allowed to keep them in the car park and our gear in the dining room whilst we explored the Abbey and surrounding area for a couple of delightful hours.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and hope to return very soon.
