I took my visiting family along one Sunday lunchtime, which stretched into a late afternoon with more wine than we would normally get through in one sitting! This was proncipally because of the excellent service, comfortable & attractive surroundings, and the overwhelming feeling of sated satisfaction thanks to an excellent meal.

I really hope that Pea Porridge doesn't suffer from being slightly out of the way, as it truly deserves to become a successful and established restaurant.

We decided to risk taking some foodie friends from London to Pea Porridge, which we had seen opening in the local paper only a couple of weeks beforehand. We needn't have worried - we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening out and would definitely return.

Pea Porridge is hidden away on Cannon St, opposite the Old Cannon Brewery, and is not obvious due in large part to a slightly obscure sign! However once you manage to find it, it has a lovely warm atmosphere, smart decor and very friendly service from the proprietress and her well-motivated and relaxed staff.

The food is "pan-European" in as far as we had everything from olde-English pea porridge, pigeon breast and Mediterranean-style cheese, fig and honey salad to start; to French-style steak and German-style pork belly, sausage and sauerkraut pot roast for mains. Some of the food, the pigeon in particular, was incredible; some of it was very good but not great (e.g. the pork belly, whilst tasty, was very salty to our liking). All of it, however, was very plentiful and creatively assembled and presented. The wine selection was full of classics and quite reasonably priced. Our one suggestion would be that the food portion sizes could be reduced and still offer good value for money - whilst we would have loved to have tried the interesting dessert menu, we could barely move after the mains!

All in all, great to have a smart yet relaxed and homely addition to Bury's restaurants, and we'll certainly be back.
