“An absolute gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2010

We spent Christmas Day at Pea Porridge and were not disappointed that we had chosen to go out. Some of our friends had already eaten there and had said it was very good.

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very welcoming. We have lived in France for over twenty years and have therefore become quite fussy where good food is concerned, everything served was excellent and at a standard we rarely find in the UK. The chef/owner certainly knows what he is doing and front of house is run smoothly by his friendly wife. There is an extensive wine list and home made food is served with attention to detail. We thought the menu was good value for money.

Highly recommended for a relaxing, easy going, gourmet experience. We will certainly go back.

“A faultless, and long, meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2009

I took my visiting family along one Sunday lunchtime, which stretched into a late afternoon with more wine than we would normally get through in one sitting! This was proncipally because of the excellent service, comfortable & attractive surroundings, and the overwhelming feeling of sated satisfaction thanks to an excellent meal.

I really hope that Pea Porridge doesn't suffer from being slightly out of the way, as it truly deserves to become a successful and established restaurant.

“Hidden gem opposite the Old Cannon Brewery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2009

We decided to risk taking some foodie friends from London to Pea Porridge, which we had seen opening in the local paper only a couple of weeks beforehand. We needn't have worried - we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening out and would definitely return.

Pea Porridge is hidden away on Cannon St, opposite the Old Cannon Brewery, and is not obvious due in large part to a slightly obscure sign! However once you manage to find it, it has a lovely warm atmosphere, smart decor and very friendly service from the proprietress and her well-motivated and relaxed staff.

The food is "pan-European" in as far as we had everything from olde-English pea porridge, pigeon breast and Mediterranean-style cheese, fig and honey salad to start; to French-style steak and German-style pork belly, sausage and sauerkraut pot roast for mains. Some of the food, the pigeon in particular, was incredible; some of it was very good but not great (e.g. the pork belly, whilst tasty, was very salty to our liking). All of it, however, was very plentiful and creatively assembled and presented. The wine selection was full of classics and quite reasonably priced. Our one suggestion would be that the food portion sizes could be reduced and still offer good value for money - whilst we would have loved to have tried the interesting dessert menu, we could barely move after the mains!

All in all, great to have a smart yet relaxed and homely addition to Bury's restaurants, and we'll certainly be back.
