How nice to be met by the porter, your luggage taken care of and likewise our car. We have only experienced this previously at a 4 star hotel in Bath. The service level stayed up there with the best, in fact the entire staff at all times seemed pleased to see us and could not have been more helpful. We stayed in the Graham Greene suit, which décor wise, was a little tired but the view and lack of noise, despite being at the front of the hotel more than made up for it. The only downside was the restaurant décor which did not seem sympathetic to the character of the building. The eating experience was also a little disappointing with rather obvious portion control. Although we are not big eaters the starters were on the mean side regarding quantity. On our first night my wife chose halibut (her favourite fish) and a very tired cut arrived which was curling at the edges and it came as no surprise that this option was crossed off the specials board. The following night we both chose duck breast which came with beetroot and potatoes. The beetroot comprised of two pieces the size of tangerine segments and we felt that at £21.95 they could have given more vegetables. This theme was continued through to breakfast, the Suffolk comprised half of a slice of black pudding, one small sausage and first for me, only one egg although not being a big eater that was fine. The butter supplied was totally inadequate for the toast and we had to request more. However, these were minor irritations and we would not hesitate to return.

This place really is a gem , it is very atmospheric and luxurious and represents a great place to meet friends and relax. What is particularly nice is that one never feels rushed and can relax and enjoy an extensive wine list at leisure !

It's impossible to stand on Angel Hill without absorbing its beauty and feeling its history. Step behind the lovely Georgian façade of the Angel Hotel, though, and prepare to be properly horrified. Good contemporary design can complement such a building but I don't think I have ever seen décor in so much conflict with its surroundings. There were some grand, wonderfully comfortable, chairs and settees to sink into but the animal hides which covered some of them made us feel as though we were in the middle of some Big Game Nightmare. By the reception desk, there was a chair covered in real zebra skin, complete with mane!

The home-made biscuits we had with our morning coffee were really scrumptious - but the surrounding slaughter did lessen our experience, as did the large black wheelie bin that was trundled through the lounge.

What a shame ...

We had booked this package for my Birthday.( my husband and I had already had this experience at their sister hotel The Salthouse so they had a lot to live up to) We had a wonderful stay, we were in room 460, the romantic suite with superb views over looking the Abbey. The room was beautifully presented, the bed and pillows super comfy. We had a bottle of bubbly on ice and chocs and gifts laid out for our arrival. The bathroom was spotless and had the signature double copper bath. Filled with oodles of hot water using the temple spa products which was sheer bliss to lie back in and read magazines. The evening meal was beautiful and we had a table over looking the abbey. Had a wonderful restful night, no noise at all from road. Totally yummy breakfast hubby had the full Suffolk and i had the American pancakes with maple syrup and berries. We opted for afternoon tea on our depature day which was absolutely delicious, i was slightly worried after reading some of the negative reviews but ours couldn't have been better, the selection of both sanwhiches and cakes amazing and lovely and fresh(even better than the salthouse hotel!) I must give a mention to the gentleman who took care of our luggage and looked after our car, brilliant service, thank you

Inspite of reading some of the reviews on here I rang the Angel Hotel to make a booking for Afternoon tea because I thought it was a large, impressive hotel in the centre of Bury. I explained to the lady on the phone that this was a special treat for my Mums 70th birthday and that some reviews had said the cakes looked like last weeks left overs. The Lady said she could guarantee that we would have an excellent experience.
On arrival we were shown to our table, the setting was lovely and all seemed fine, then we were told that the chef had been informed we were here (?)
2 plastic cake stands we're brought out to us, one was cracked the other was wobbling so you had to chase your sandwich around to catch it. The sandwiches were fresh although nobody asked if we had dietary requirements or likes and dislikes. Then the main part of an afternoon tea is the cakes
I was ashamed of the cakes that were on the stands and put in front of my Mum !
We had fruit scones with clotted cream (no jam - we had to ask for this) we all cut open the scones and they weren't cooked inside, and were so heavy. Other cakes on the stand were basic at best, small fairy cakes with a blob of butter icing and mini marshmallows which my niece at 7 years old would be proud of but not a high class afternoon tea at £16 per person.
I really have to say that this was the worst afternoon tea I've had and wish that I'd looked elsewhere in Bury because there are at least 2 proper cake shops within 5 minutes of The Angel with display cabinets full of wonderful creations that make your mouth water.

Booked a one night Saturday night stay here for my birthday and we were wowed from the moment we arrived.
All the staff we met could not do enough for us, warm, friendly, helpful and courteous.
Your car is parked for you free of charge.
Bags carried to our room.
Room was enormous, as was the bed and bathroom. Huge copper bath and walk in monsoon shower.
Very clean and comfortable.
The bar in the vaulted basement is very quirky, unique and intimate (pricey, but great for a treat)
The only disappointment was the breakfast. This is all table service and no self serve. limited choice of cereal, pastries and fruit. The fruit salad was a tiny portion and poor range of fruit in it. A yogurt would have been nice. I ordered porridge which I could not eat as it was too rich as it seemed to have been made with cream, which I had not expected. Cooked breakfast options are included, and were of an average standard, but all the food took ages to arrive. We were at breakfast for over an hour and were nearly late checking out as we had not expected it to take so long.
Despite this we will be back as the room, hotel location and overall service were excellent.

Just had an overnight stay and was disappointed at the very low standard of the room. The bathroom had mildew in the grouting and lacked ventilation. Whilst the room was clean it was the smaller points that made it look bad. Pencil marks on the room wall, the paint flaking and cracked, badly marked doors. The walls in both the rooms had some splash marks from some fluid or another on them and the bottom edge of the window frames had a build up of black mildew. All i can say is I will not be staying again as its not worth the money.
