“"Pleasant evening, but over priced!"”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We visited The Angel for a dinner reservation. The overall evening was lovely and very pleasant, however we feel that the restaurant is over priced for what we ultimately felt was posh pub food. The starters were of a high standard and presented well, however we were let down by our mains. We both had steak for our mains and we felt that the portion size was overwhelming. Our plates were full and over crowded, unlike our delicate starters. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare, which unfortunately was over done, although still acceptable. The steaks in total were £50, so you would only assume that they would be cooked to perfection.
The service was very good, however we had more than one waitress looking after us, so were asked on many different occasions by different waitresses if everything was ok. We feel that although attentive, there was an element of being rushed through our meal.
One major let down is that they automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill. We asked this to be removed as in our personal opinion leaving gratuity is discretional and should reflect your experience rather than be demanded by the establishment.
Considering all, we had a lovely evening, especially downstairs in the Wingspan bar, which was as ever very pleasant with a relaxed atmosphere. Overall, we wouldn't rush back to The Angel for dinner, as Bury St Edmunds has many other respectable restaurants of equal or better standards at a more reasonable price.

We stayed here for my partners brothers wedding. This is a very beautiful hotel with very stunning views there's so many things going on around the hotel too see an lots of history to enjoy! The hotel staff are very friendly an helpful with some great characters to lighten up the conversations. Very beautiful rooms and lovely breakfasts the down stairs bar is a must see its simply a great place to stay and enjoy. The only down fall for us is the price was a lot for one night an the beds where simply way to hot with thick winter covers with it being hot weather this made for a slightly sweaty awakening. Other then tiny things like this it is somewhere we would love to return to.

We were give a present of Afternoon Tea and very much looked forward to our visit. We got off to a poor start when were were asked if we wanted tea or coffee - rather surprising when we were booked in for afternoon tea. The tea itself was at best very average, some of the cakes were stodgy and dry and worst of all were the positively awful cupcakes with a dreadful green topping. Scones were warm and nice but cream was decidedly lacking - two miniscule pots with strawberry portion at bottom and crumbled meringue on top. Service although friendly was lacking - we had to ask for plates on which to eat. Even at half the cost it we felt it would have been overpriced. Very disappointing as we love The Angel and have entertained there and always had first class service and quality.

This beautiful Georgian ivy-covered hotel is right at the very centre of historic Bury St Edmunds. Our large room was on the second floor at the end of the corridor and was bright and airy with contemporary and funky decor. With two windows overlooking the Abbey and Cathedral, comfy armchairs for relaxing and watching the world go by and a sumptuous bathroom with HUGE copper bath (and rainfall shower) it was just about perfect. There was also a freeview TV (which we did not use) and a DAB radio with ipod docking station which was a nice touch as we could listen to our own choice of music. As far as the accommodation was concerned, we just could not imagine this experience could be bettered. We stayed for two nights and will definitely return before long.

On the downside, the service in the restaurant is not very good and would be greatly improved by better staff training and supervision. Although the food is good and well presented, dinner was somewhat chaotic, as was breakfast the following morning, so we decided to eat elsewhere on the second night as the restaurant service does not do the establishment justice.

We stayed here on our wedding night and were disappointed with the level of service we received. The hotel lacks a personality to welcome guests and prefers to have staff wearing earpieces than actually communicating with customers. Our room was lovely but there was no acknowledgement that it was our wedding night in our room. Breakfast was ok but for the prices being charged I would expect 'Excellent'!! I have since conveyed my thoughts to the hotel who seem not particularly interested to make it right. Pew have been offered an upgrade next time we stay ' if one is available' !! Says it all really. Shame the Angel is so interested in the tourists rather than people who are local.

Stayed for a wedding. Staff were very polite. Had free parking and internet. Booked a deluxe double room but it was very small, could barely walk around the bed. Bed was hard and uncomfortable. Breakfast was included in the price, which was good as I wouldn't have paid for it. Very slow service and over salted food.

Stayed here for a single night for a family get together. Excellent accommodation, clean, helpful friendly staff with a very good reasonably priced restaurant. Very centrally located for anything you may wish to see in Bury St Edmunds. Rooms a bit on the pricey side - as I was on my own I had sole use of a huge double room which may in part account for my view of the price (why do so few hotels seem to do single rooms?). One minor petty quibble would be that the staff can be almost too attentive - I may no longer be young but I am capable of carrying a small overnight bag down a flight of stairs without someone rushing to my aid!
