“80th birthday celebration”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

I was one of a party of about 30 who celebrated the 80th birthday of a family member in the restaurant of the Ravenwood Hotel. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with ample outside seating, pre-lunch drinks were served in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, the meal (which had obviously been pre-arranged) was served in one of the main restaurants. The four course meal was excellent, the service was very efficient and the general atmosphere was very relaxed and unhurried. We enjoyed further tea and coffee in the large poolside area, again served by very friendly and efficient members of staff. Some family members had dined at the Ravenwood on previous occasions; this was my first visit and found it a very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Unable to offer either opinion or advice as I only dined in the restaurant.

We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary on 21 June with family and friends at Ravenwood to remind us of our wonderful wedding reception also held there 25 years ago overseen by the owner Craig Jarvis. As on that magical evening, Craig was still very much in evidence to ensure that our anniversary celebrations were absolutely perfect. The lovely Becky organised everything from the champagne and canapé reception in the beautiful grounds to the truly delicious dinner enjoyed in the stunning restaurant. The service and professionalism of the friendly staff could not be faulted. All our guests commented on how much they enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere, The evening celebrations were followed by a smaller family birthday celebration lunch the next day in the summerhouse. The weather was fantastic so the children in our party were able to enjoy splashing in the open air pool. Lunch was superb. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We will treasure the memories of that fantastic weekend and I am sure that many of our friends and family will return to Ravenwood at the earliest opportunity. We have already booked to return for a romantic dinner for two!

Room Tip: The Mews rooms although compact are excellent value for money. The larger rooms in the main house al...

We stayed two nights in Ravenwood Hall in June. The location is lovely and quiet with good access to Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, etc. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. Breakfast choices were good and more than the typical Full English, in case you aren't looking for the full fry up each morning. We also dined with them both nights in the evening. Food was very good and well prepared. Save room for dessert as they are a wonderful way to end the meal!

We stayed in the Saxon room which is one of their high end rooms. It was comfortable with tea making facilities, a fan, chairs to relax in, etc. There was a lack of consistency in the room being made up. When we checked in, one bath towel, one hand towel and two face cloths. We had to ask for more towels. The second day, there were two bath towels, two hand towels, no face cloths and disposable slippers.

The only complaint was the shower. You don't expect brilliant plumbing in an old building like this one, but took 10 mins for water in shower to get warm (never got hot) and you could stand in there 10 mins and not get wet. Not enough water pressure for either of us to wash our hair. Fortunately, the slipper bath had a hand held sprayer that we could use. Staff was good with our complaints and gave money off the room rate to compensate.

Thanks,
Teri & Roger

Stayed here on the Sunday night deal, Hotel and grounds are lovely and stayed in Mews 2 which was a lovely room with excellent access to the grounds for our little dog. Evening meal was superb and the breakfast in the morning was excellent especially the scrambled eggs. The staff were very helpful and attentive and I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for somewhere for relaxtion and good food. The only downside, was the early morning alarm call from the cockerill, but have and will recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Room Tip: Try the mews rooms if you are travelling with a dog.

You wouldn't know the A14 was so close to the hotel. It's surrounded by tree's and has the most lovely grounds. The hotel itself is very old, but that is what makes it so charming. We found the atmosphere to be very relaxed and the staff very attentive. Our evening dinner was excellent, a lovely menu with local produce. We stayed in the Dean's Room, which was clean and the bed was huge and comfortable. I really liked the decor which was tasteful and in keeping with the character and age of the hotel. If you want uniform rooms with straight lines and no character then don't come here. If you are after something different and a hotel you will remember then give it a try. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the front of the hotel which was lovely. We slept with the window open al...

This hall is set in a great location.

We arrived and there was a wedding reception, but this did not effect our stay.
The staff where great. we checked in no fuss. The room in the annexe we had because we had dogs with us was really well designed and comfortable. The restaurant was real old time french style menu and service. Being a chef this was great to see 100% for food and service.

A hidden gem

Stayed in the Abbey room for two nights in June. First impressions of the hotel were excellent. We sat on the immaculately presented patio and received excellent service from the staff.

The grounds were wonderful and very well kept, as we had a dog with us we found some lovely walks directly from the hotel. We also found the hotel extremely dog friendly, this was a BIG plus for us. Dogs are allowed in all areas apart from the dining room (which is fair enough) and staff seem to all love dogs.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was absolutely gorgeous, very pricy but to be honest it is possibly up there with some of the best food I've ever had.

The reason for the average review may seem harsh to some, however we paid £300 for two nights bed and breakfast in a main house room and don't think we received the comfort we deserved.

The room, albeit well decorated and well furnished fell far short of expectation. It was very very hot and opening the windows didn't make it any better. It was about 22 degrees centigrade outside so I was fairly understanding about this, seeing as the hotel does provide a fan.

We were both very tired the first night so went to bed at 10:30pm........

Our room was directly above the dining room, due to it being an old building the ceiling was very thin and we could hear a pin drop in the dining room below. Due to a large group in the dining room until about midnight and then staff setting up for breakfast after this we felt like we were sharing our bedroom with 20 diners which was frustrating.

On the bed was a very thick duvet, due to it being very hot in the room this was horrible. Furthermore the pillows were awful, heavy and provided no support (worn out). At midnight I asked for another couple of pillows at the reception, the hotel had none, it was suggested I take a cushion from the sofas in the bar area and use them, not too impressed with that suggestion.

Also the hotel lights illuminate the grounds and this looks superb, however they don't turn them off until the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately this also illuminates the room even with the thick curtains drawn.

We both had an awful nights sleep and as a result didn't enjoy the following day as much as we thought we should. We went to Tescos the following day and bought two new pillows and some ear plugs, as a result we had a much better nights sleep the following night.

To summarise: the whole experience is excellent BUT.........this was unfortunately let down by the comfort of the room (possibly one of the most important things). If we didn't pay a premium for it I wouldn't be so bothered, but I've seriously had a better nights sleep in a war zone !
