“Fell in love with this windmill”
Review of Bardwell Windmill

Bardwell Windmill
Reviewed 7 July 2014 via mobile

Called here when on holiday from North Wales. I have a passion for windmills and admire people who work hard to conserve them. One such lady is the adorable Enid Wheeler who I had the pleasure to meet. We were allowed to look around and climbed up a very steep ladder to the second level. Mrs Wheeler told us all about the mill and the struggle to repair the damage of storms. Please check out their website and support them. They are having a Threashing day in August. The mill is free to visit but will welcome donations..highly recommended

Myself & 3 sisters staying locally stopped at Bardwell Mill whilst following Millers Trail. The lady who owned the mill couldn't have been more welcoming. After having a good look around the Mill & shop we all sat in her lovely garden & had a cup of tea and a chat as though we were neighbours just popping next door!!

I have tried all the flours in and around Suffolk, and I can honestly say Bardwell Windmill is the best I have ever baked with.

Beautiful building with history in every nook and cranny. It's hard to deside what was best, the lovely owner, or the windmill itself. I loved it here and will be returning here soon!

My visit was on a day when a fete was being held to raise money for the windmill charity, so there were traction engines and very old cars on a nearby field, and crafts and raffle stalls just below the mill. Our guide explained that the mill was rebuilt to working order in the late 1980s and his father had bought it to have a small business grinding corn as a near-retirement occupation. But then the great storm of 1987 occurred. The tail fan spun up to such a speed that it flew off, landing across the road in a field. With no ability to control the mill direction the main sails then succumbed to the stress and fell nearby. Not long after this calamity his father died.

Eventually the family rallied round, set up a charity to rebuild the mill, and at the time of our visit it had done brief test runs, and there were sacks of corn waiting for suitable wind conditions. We were shown the various clever systems employed in the mill to save work and automatically regulate the operation. Our guide was honest enough to say he was not yet an expert in wind powered miilling but nevertheless he provided an interesting talk and tour. I'd like to go back when it is working.
