Description: The Bay Tree Cafe Bistro has been an integral part of St Johns Street, one the loveliest areas in Bury St Edmunds, for more than 14 years. Being one the oldest buildings in the street we have been careful not go overboard with modernisation by keeping the interior subtle and furniture simple to offer a balance of cosy cafe and with a hint of modern bistro. With dining rooms on both the ground and first floors it is deceptively larger that it first appears. Our upstairs room has the addition of a cosy sofa and has a lovely feel with its low ceiling and original beams. Its a great space for meetings, coffee mornings, book clubs and classes. This room is also popular for private dining, baby showers and even a small wedding reception. Mark, our chef, runs two menus and both are served with equal care and attention with every dish being freshly prepared to order. Cooking to order is important to him. Yes, it may take a little longer but he is a firm believer that we should make time to eat, enjoy the moment and relax a little. He also sources, where possible, ingredients locally, most supplied by other independant businesses based in Bury St Edmunds. We are especially known for our lovely bread, delivered to us every morning and some of which is baked just for us, so you won't find it anywhere else! Our hope is that the Bay Tree's menus offer something for everyone; vegetarian dishes, low cal/fat options, dishes suitable for special diets and child portions. Our staff work hard to provide good service and make your visit a pleasant one. Be it for breakfast, lunch or grabbing a quick coffee or collecting your takeaway, we will endeavour to look after you. We are always on the look out for new ideas, tastes, services to offer Bay Tree Cafe customers, old and new.

“A gem in Bury St Eds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2012

The Bay Tree Cafe Bistro, is another great find in Bury St Edmunds.

The well priced cafe is inviting and comfortable with additional seating upstairs. The service is cheery, friendly and prompt.

The menu has a large range of foods to pick from, including: homemade cakes and pastries; breakfasts; light lunches; main meals, for example: savoury cheesecake, served with walnut salad (V); sandwiches and salads.

Both my mother and I ordered Prawn and Avocado, listed beneath sandwiches/salads. We decided to have it as a salad and each of us had a huge pile of prawns. It was delicious.

My only minor comment is: I would have preferred the salad to have been served without a dressing already drizzled on it, and to have been given a choice of salad dressings instead. The salad came with a pot of mayo for the prawns, but again I think it would be advantageous to offer a choice of either mayo, garlic mayo, salad cream or Marie Rose sauce.

I will certainly be recommending the cafe to my friends.

“An excellent sandwich!”

I have only visited a couple of times but enjoyed both visits. Not sure if
it hasn't changed hands since we were last there.

“Consistent good quality”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2012

My occasional shopping trips to Bury St Edmunds would not be not complete without a visit to the Bay Tree. The quality of the freshly prepared food is consistently high and the bacon and advocado sandwiches are a favourite of mine. The cheese scones are the best I have tasted and are served warm. Although it can get busy at lunchtime, it has a relaxed feel upstairs. The Bay Tree would be my preferred choice for a quick snack or luchntime meal based purely on the quality of the food and it has the further advantage of being on St John's Street which is full of interesting shops.

“I would choose this again over a coffee chain”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2012

Popped in for a coffee and cake after shopping in Bury. Great little place with a nice relaxed atmosphere, which is much better than a boring coffee chain. There are more seats and sofas upstairs, so when it looks busy (which it was) you can go up there. The food coming out of the kitchen looked very good, and the owner said they were starting to open in the evenings too. Recommended.

Not far from the centre of town, I found this Bistro to be very relaxing, the food was excellent and freshly prepared, the service was good and everywhere was spotlessly clean, I will be back!!!!
