Had a one night stay in the Bushell
happened to be Mothering Sunday so assumed we would struggle to get a table for lunch, but no such problem. We were offered a table with no problem. Food was average.
Room was beautiful and very clean. Impressed on the standard of bedding and the very comfy bed.
Staff were friendly and very helpful.

I stay here quite often with work, and always find the food good, the team really friendly and the rooms comfortable. WIth car parking as well, who could ask more from this Inn. Not a 'full service' hotel, but great value anyway.

Room Tip: The carpark rooms are great.

Having pre booked a table for 4.00pm we were not shown to our table until 4.30. Not once did any staff member update us on the table situation or apologise. When booking the table I asked for 3 highchairs to be provided, there was only 2, again no explanation and when I questioned this was just told there wasn't another available. It took 40 minutes for our starters to appear and 50 minutes before the children's dinners arrive (nearly an hour and a half after booking time=3 very unhappy hungry children), again no update or apology from staff at any point. Empty glasses were not cleared from table until we asked. No one came and asked how are meal was and after clearing main course plates we were not once asked if we wanted any dessert. Just very slow service and basic things missed with no apology from anyone at anytime made a nice family gathering a big dissapointment.

We thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay in the Bushel. It is right in the middle of Bury St Edmunds which makes it a great place to explore the little streets, market, Abbey gardens etc.The Bushel has recently been refurbished to very high decorative order and the atmosphere in the bar areas is relaxing. There were lots of locals eating and enjoying the ambience and I even noticed some board games in the corner. The Bushel has 9 rooms, some outside in an annexe of the pub. We were allocated a room here, which at first I was disappointed as the rooms are in the small carpark, and I thought they wouldbe noisy with cars coming and going. But noise was minimal as the carpark is small and most of thespaces were allocated to the rooms, so noone was driving off around closing time. But because we had to go outside to get in to our room we needed to wear our coats!
The rooms were clean and warm. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom had a lovely double shower.
Dinner was delicious, as was the breakfast. All the normal fayre, cereal, yoghurt, full english etc. The toast could have been home made as it was proper, thick, seedy slices..
All in all I would thoroughly recommend a stay here, and we hope to visit again.
Well done to the Bushel. xx

Room Tip: numbers 4 to 9 are inside the pub.

My husband and I stayed at The Bushel in January and it was lovely, the room was beautiful and the shower in the bathroom amazing!! The food was delicious and such good value for money! The pub is centrally located so within walking distance of all local shops and pubs. Highly recommend a visit!

We dined here on a Friday evening. I can only advise to stay well clear!

We were immediately disappointed by the service as we had to wait at the bar for over 15 minutes to be served drinks even though only two small orders were taken before us.
The bar staff were slow and had no knowledge of the drinks on offer. The barman was unaware of the lagers in front of him on draught and they could not recommend a sweet white wine or work the till properly.

Our table was booked for 7.30, we arrived early and were eventually given directions to our table after we got our drinks. After waiting half an hour for someone to take our order we gave up and went to the bar to place it. A waitress then told us to sit back down and she'll take our order, before disappearing to the other side of the pub not to be seen again.

The starters were nice but we didn't get them until over an hour after our booking. There was then over half an hour before our mains came out, think it was about 9.15. After already making one complaint one of our mains was then forgotten! We were given a free bottle of wine to compensate and the meal turned up a few minutes later.

The mains were disappointing anyway, certainly not worth that wait! We didn't bother with dessert as it was so late and we were fed up with the service by then. One waitress seemed apologetic but the others that came over just didn't seem to care that we were unhappy.

My expectations for a room above a pub were fairly low when I booked The Bushel - I imagined Fawlty Towers with added noise. So I was surprised and delighted by what I found at The Bushel.

On arrival we were provided with a parking space in their secure private car park at the rear. We received a very warm welcome by the staff who were professional but very friendly - as were most people we met in Bury.

Clearly Greene King have invested a lot of money on a recent refurbishment. The decoration is stripped back, shabby chic done tastefully and in keeping with the age of the building and its period features. Our room was full of character and individuality but with all the comforts you would expect from a corporate hotel: a modern tv, comfy mattress, tea and coffee making facilities, a decent shower, in-room iron and ironing board etc. We had two good nights sleep and there was no noise from the pub as it closed at 11pm.

The breakfasts were included and were far better than any hotel breakfast I have had for a long time. The ingredients tasted high quality and local. The bacon and sausages were to die for. Not great for dieters. Again the service at breakfast time was very warm and friendly.

We didn't eat in the pub during the day but we did sample a few local ales and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.

Add to this good value for money.

I would highly recommend a stay here.
