We went to see the fabulous Portuguese Fado singer Ana Moura. The venue was only half-full and she had to struggle to create any atmosphere; however by the end the audience was on its feet and cheering!
As others have said this is an excellent venue with good acoustics and easy parking. It is however somewhat underused and has not yet managed to develop any sense of "personality". I understand that a recent proposal to share management with the Theatre Royal has (in my opinion fortunately) fallen through; however I believe that the two venues do intend to share marketing and ticketing.
Perhaps the read problem is that Bury St. Edmunds, although a lovely town, is not regarded by promoters as "being on the way to anywhere". The venue is also somewhat small to make gigs profitable: bigger events tend to take place at the Ipswich Regent. At present the Apex seems to be a hall in search of a meaning.
The hall was a bit chilly to start with and the seats, though wide and comfortable, have hard wooden armrests! There is however plenty of legroom.
