“Beautiful and quiet location but disappointing accommodation”
Reviewed 2 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

We arrived in the dark and could not see the code pad to open the gates, eventually we managed to punch in the code but only one side of the double gates opened which made the drive in with the car extremely narrow almost clipped my wing mirrors. The setting is secluded/quiet and didn't disappoint although, the lack of outside lighting left my wondering around! luckily there was a lovely gentleman/caretaker who spotted me and helped me obtain the key and enter the cottage. Comfortably warm and welcoming but interior is a little tired and unclean. Dust in the corners of the rooms and cobweb/ dirt behind and under furniture. The dishwasher had a piece of tape holding the bottom panel together and the cooker was coated in grease. Only the minimum cleaning seemed to have been done in between the last occupants and ourselves. The was a problem with the stiff shower taps and the temperature set on very hot! The Games room appears unfinished and was untidy with ping pong, billiard balls strewn about and the felt on the billiard table was damaged.
I'd recommend the location, but not Curlew cottage, perhaps the other cottages are of a better standard….

I'm glad that you enjoyed the setting and agree that it's disappointing that the gates and outside lights weren't working when you arrived. We will attend to our repairs and maintenance and I will investigate the matters you raised re the cleaning as this is at odds with the high standards that we expect and usually achieve. Happy new year and thank you for your feed back on which we will act.

“Peaceful, tranquil and relaxing”
Reviewed 4 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Curlew Cottage, it is very warm and spacious, the beds are very comfortable and the shower is amazing. All the family enjoyed the well equipped games room, it became a nightly ritual to go across after tea for a game of pool and table tennis. The setting was perfect, rural but not too far from the main roads. We loved the nature reserve next door and we were privileged to be able to see a kingfisher there which made our holiday even more special.

“Secluded, beautifully appointed, barn conversion”
Reviewed 24 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

If you are looking for a quiet, restful retreat for exploring the area around Bury St Edmunds and you are interested in walking and nature, then this is the place for you. It is beautifully appointed with everything you could possible need and more. On arrival there was a welcome tray with tea, coffee, fruit cake and a jug of milk in the fridge. Thoroughly recommended.

“wonderful and beautiful and recommendable”
Reviewed 20 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Madam Emma,

since I myself was not present I can write some sentences about how comfortable my girlfriend Barbara Covell has felt with the grandchild. She had to go back unfortunately after one night because the child has felt longing for your mom. The cottage is really breathtaking. It really has everything you need. Games, DVD's and the beds were really comfortable and the owner abel Emma was really helpful Also has served as a welcome cake and milk. This is a really nice touch and we will always go to this cottage and of course you can only recommend this cottage and owner Emma.
All of the interior is spotless, the bathroom and everything you want to go in the cottage again and again.
Thank you Emma

Liked best: All of the extra's - games, books, welcome pack etc
Liked least: no direct path from the cottage to the gate, it was impossible to push a buggy across the gravel so needed two of us to lift it over to the main gate.

“Simply Stunning”
Reviewed 22 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

This was our second stay at Lackford Lake Barns and infact Curlew Cottage. For a UK break there is simply nowhere better.

The lodges are set in a beautifully landscaped courtyard behind electric gates in a Nature Reserve. The privacy is truely amazing, there was absolutely no noise or even light polution.

When we arrived, we were greated by the owners and shown in, there was a welcome tray on the dining table with milk, real butter, lovely fresh bread and jams set out for us. Curlew cottage is a three bedroom barn with room for 6 people in 1 ensuite double (with 4 poster bed) and 2 twin rooms with their own bathroom. We always have freinds join us whilst taking a short UK break and the layout is great for this. Each barn has 2 parking spaces and the bedroom are on either side of the main area with seperate temperature controls for underfloor heating.

The finish is to a very high standard with solid oak doors and kitchen, exposed beams, rain head showers and furniture which is really in keeping with the building. There are 2 hugh sofas to chill out on and a dining table to seat 6 and open plan kitchen. There is a distinct "farm house" feel about the place.

But its the attention to detail that is hard to beat, a fully fitted kitchen with huge fridge/freezer, fan oven cooker and even a full sized dish washer. There is everything in the kithcen draws and cupboards that you would ever need. We cooked full meals each night and were never left looking for the right utensils. Thre were games, magazines and book for us to enjoy. Free WIFI (which is great as O2 signal isnt great, but thats what breaks are about, no interuptions).

There is a laundry room to do your clothes and a games room with pool table and table tennis.

The location is within a Nature Reserve with lakes all around it and lovely walks. There is a visitors center and lots of Hides to see the birds, also Monkjacks and other wildlife to see. Last years visit was in deep snow and it looked magical. Bury St Edmunds is about 7 miles away and there are local villages inbetween, most of which serve food.

Be aware, this place is a little off the beaten track, which is great, but it can be missed, just look out for Lackford Lakes gravel drive and you will find it!

We will be back, it's like a real home from home and we don't want to leave.

Thank you so much! I think you stayed in Lark Lodge on your first visit and Curlew Cottage on your second visit. I think this review relates to Lark Lodge as it sleeps 6 unlike Curlew Cottage. Which sleeps 4. Lark Lodge has big blue sofas whereas Curlew Cottage has red! They are very similar though (next door to each other ) I'm really glad you enjoyed your stay!

“Another wonderful property at Lackford Lakes Barns”
Reviewed 21 November 2013 for a stay in November 2013

Having previously stayed at Holm Oak Barn, I booked a four night stay at Curlew Cottage. It is a beautifully restored barn with open plan living. It is clean and tidy with everything you need. The bedrooms are lovely and we were taken aback by the four poster bed - very impressive. We stayed in a very cold spell and the underfloor heating made the whole place warm and comfortable. The property is immaculate with lovely old beams in the living area, really comfy beds and a great wifi connection. We only wished we could have stayed longer; the peace and quiet was wonderful.
