My wife and I visited "The Old Rectory" in Hopton again last weekend - our fifth visit in 4 years. How hosts Sarah and Bobby Llewellyn maintain their superlative standards beggars belief.
Comfort - of course, food and a cellar that are too, too tempting to consider any calorie count but above all the totally relaxing charm of a haven away from the continuing, depressing reports of world events.
There are always new locations of interest to discover near Hopton and this time we were intrigued by the elongated street of up-market shops, antiques showrooms and reasonably priced restaurants in Long Melford. Elsewhere, the English Distillery was but a month away from launching the first distillation that can be marketed legally as whisky so we were too early but their "Chapter 4" promises an enticing prospect.
We are now planning our next Old Rectory visit that this time might finally permit us to see the garden in high summer; we can't wait for year 2010 to unfold.
