“Luxury wine....cheese and bedroom”

My friend took me away as a surprise for my birthday. And I have to say we had a fabulous time.

The hotel - We stayed in the Attic room, which was very sweet indeed. With complimentary bottle of sherry, tv and DVD player with a DVD of visit Lavenham which was useful, comfy bed, lovely bathroom with robes. All very nice indeed.

The restuarant - This was really the highlight of our trip, being a keen student sommelier I was delighted when asking for the wine list, being presented with a rather large book of wines to chose from. The food was excellent, I had the duck for starter and main which were both cooked correctly. Followed by a most excellent choice of cheeses and brandy's to end the evening.

The service was first class and the French waiter was both friendly and knowledgable about the food & wines. I even got to practice a bit of French which is always entertaining.

I highly recommend and look forward to visiting again.

We stayed in a lovely room No. 3 The Tudor Suite. Sitting room and bedroom are excellent. Once I fathomed out the tea/coffee machine that was good also. We unfortunately had to stay Sunday and Monday night the days when the restaurant was closed. We ate at the Swan, which was excellent.
Why 3 stars. First reason was there were no staff on in the evening and a bit of help with the coffee machine would have been helpful. Security might have been a problem because anyone could have walked in and taken a key. Second reason is at £15 the English breakfast is overly expensive but real objection is that the coffee on both days was dreadful. It literally was like dishwater. When I mentioned it to lady owner she showed no concern what so ever. Shame the French usually make great coffee.

We booked at the last minute for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast and had a fabulous time. We stayed in the four-poster room, with associated sitting room. Everything was perfect. The memory of our dinner stays with me. I had Foie Gras Creme Brulee, an utterly exquisite creation, followed by Halibut and then a warm white chocolate and raspberry moelleux - stunning, My wife had scallops, guinea fowl and panna cotta. It was the best meal we have eaten for ages.

Room Tip: The best rooms are numbers 1 or 3

Lavenham is quaint and lovely and the Great House is just as you'd expect it of not better - beautiful inside oozing olde worlde charm, fantastic room and then the food was amazing - a really special place for a meal that is good value for the level of cuisine - would love to go again!

The Great House is really special - first, the bedrooms are furnished in a very modern style, and second, the building, including the bedrooms, is timber-framed, dating from the 15th or 16th century and the owners have not swept away the ancient feel of it as so many modern conversions have done. Its French owners could teach we Brits a bit about how to respect our heritage! Beautifully done.

The Great House has a great reputation for its restaurant, sadly not open on a Sunday evening when we were there, but breakfast was fine.

And the location in Market Square, next door to the equally ancient Guildhall, is perfect. The Guildhall is superbly looked after by the National Trust and there's a great exhibition about Lavenham there too. Join the NT and support their good work!

Room Tip: All very different but all three of our rooms, 1, 3 and 4, were spacious.

Stayed one night with my husband and his sister as we wanted to see the village and we weren't disappointed with Lavenham, its picture perfect. Neither were we disappointed with the Great House rooms, we had the tudor room and I must say its the best room we have ever stayed in, clean, large seating area, well equipped and packed full of period character. My sister in law had the attic room and she loved it, its small but had everything she required and again was packed full of period features. The continental breakfast was fantastic and the service very good. Our only disappointment was that we stayed on a Monday and the restaurant was closed, but that means we will have to go back so we can sample the food. Will certainly look forward to that.

Room Tip: Took a peak at the Grand room but the Tudor room is the best by a long way

It is always a pleasure to celebrate a special occasion here. The food and surroundings are delightful with first class service. Just a shame that the couple at the table next to us came in their shorts and t shirts, I know it was hot but they could have made more effort like the rest of the diners.
