I was in London for business, as I am regularly, and as I usually to spent the weekend in the countryside, England having the most beautiful on this planet or any other. I was drawn to Lavenham after a stay at nearby picturesque village Long Melford; I read lovely things about Lavenham on the interwebs, ditto The Swan.

Those accolades did not do justice to this unbelievably wonderful and, dare I say it, property. The Swan is a gem from stoop to roof. It's a late medieval coaching in with original half-timbers and inglenook fireplaces but with all the conveniences and comforts of "modern life." I am an utter English history nerd, and always seek out old things; but in twenty or so years of travelling in England I can say without fear of contradiction that no property has combined the ancient and the modern as successfully, or as tastefully, as the Swan. There's a wonderful and marvellously evocative smell of woodsmoke throughout; the narrow Tudor hallways open to well-appointed rooms with amazingly comfortable furnishings and showers. One could spend hours in the common areas whiling away the time with a book or a newspaper in front of a fire. This is without a doubt the "homeiest" place I've ever stayed.

As for the food -- consistently brilliant, five-stars at every turn. British classics - lamb, roast beef, steaks -- but all so fresh and prepared so incredibly well, you'll almost think yourself to be trying them for the first time. I especially recommend the Ploughman's, in the Brasserie. Add in the wonderfully helpful and courteous staff and the incredible beauty and friendlieness of the village and its residents, and the Swan is a place to return to again and again. I know -- I'm going back to England and have already booked a room there. Can't wait to bring my wife and daughter at some point.

A big thank you to all the staff at the Swan. From the moment we checked in to when we left the next morning we were made to feel like guests, not clients. Afternoon tea was lovely, and the evening meal from the house menu was excellent with first class service. The wine waiter was knowledgeable and friendly and chose a nice white for us. Breakfast was the same, excellent service, terrific food.

The room was a reasonable size with space for two armchairs as well as the dressing table, with a large comfortable bed. Whether it was the room location or the hotel overall, there was none of the late night noise we've experienced in other hotels

Would definitely recommend and hope to return soon.

Thanks again to all the staff for really making our stay so enjoyable

A highly picturesque hotel in a pretty town, with comfortable and attractive public areas, an historic bar with WWII USAF connections, and a choice of a smarter restaurant (The Gallery) or a more relaxed and modern-feeling Brasserie. We ate in both and enjoyed excellent food and service in both. However, apart from the fascinating building, what makes The Swan stand out is the friendliness, efficiency and generally helpful and pleasant attitude of the staff. Every staff member we had dealings with was excellent. They gave the impression they were thoroughly enjoying their jobs and were pleased to be helping the guests get the very best out of their stay.
The only negative was the poor quality of the pillows in the bedroom: too thin and they seemed to have an artificial filling which got uncomfortably hot. But against the overall impression of the place, that feels like being pretty picky!

We recently stayed at The Swan for 2 nights. From first contact at booking, to check-out the whole experience was fabulous! We were given a small suite at the front of the hotel which was very comfortable, spacious and impeccably clean throughout. Dinner on both evenings was so nice, apart from they had run out of my fav desert but the replacement choices were great! At breakfast you are spoilt for choice, they even brewed my Chai tea bags that i had with me :)
The staff clearly devote their lives to this hotel as we saw the same faces the whole time, everyone was so nice and polite and the ambience in the hotel is very relaxed. The barman showed us the new cocktail menu and we were encouraged to add our own. The bar is relaxing, although could benefit from some background music.
We would most definitely return to the Swan, esp once the Spa is finished.
Lavenham itself is a very pretty medieval town, you almost expect to see Harry Potter and Dobby running around! And the St Peter and Paul church is very impressive.
Amazing place, well worth the cost.

Fantastic room with high ceilings and beamed roof. Lovely bathroom. All facilities in the room were first class. Breakfast was a delight....eggs benedict, my favourite. The lounge area was very comfortable and it was a delight to stay in and read in there. The bar was so historic, being the haunt of local USAAF bomber crews during world war II. I hope they haven't changed it!

A great place.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your experience of staying at the Swan hotel and thank you for your kind comments about our breakfast. Our Airmen's bar hasn't changed, it is still full of second World War memorabilia - a reminder of the American airmen stationed here.

Kind regards
