sorry for taking so long to post this - we visited a year ago but it was great. we literally booked hours before travellinle for a 2 night stay and managed to grab the last room avaiable. We were told that the room was the least desirable in the hotel and was at the back. Well it was just fine, much better than we were led to believe - exceeding expectations is always a good start! Our deal included a 'full english' on bith days plus an evening meal - we were more than happy to use the restaurant again on the second night as it was reall good.

Great staff, everything absolutely spot on, well done!!

Lavenham is a wonderful jewel, well worth a visit. The only thing that could improve it would be to get rid of all the parking in the main square - but there's nowhere else to park so hey ho.

thoroughly recommended.

Well, i really have no idea where to start. Myself and my husband have now stayed at the Swan a total of 4 times in the past 5 months and each time we visit, we just love it more and more.

Every time we have been, we receive a friendly and warm welcome, and only once i've had to introduce myself by name, as they remembered us on all other return visits.

We decided to visit the Swan last year as a potential venue for our wedding, and as soon as we entered the front door (on a cold October night) we were struck by the warmth and cosy feeling of the place. The staff were superb, and showed us to our room and were very keen to check we were more than satisfied with the room. We had dinner there that night too, and the food deserves its very own review in the Restaurant section, as that too was simply divine.

Our beds have always been incredibly comfortable, the reception warm and staff always go out of their way to ensure you feel welcome and are well attended to. As i said, we looked at it for a wedding venue, and ended up completely falling in love with the place, so we got married here in February. Our guests were blown away with the high standard of service, that was never at any time compromised by the fact that hotel was completely full up. In fact, i can honestly say, i've never noticed a difference myself in the level of service provided there when it was quiet to full up.

The breakfast is fantastic and all served at your table, with plenty of choice for people of all ages! My incredibly fussy neices were delighted with the pancakes!

In short, we cannot wait to return to the Swan and soak up more of their unique and wonderful hospitality. My only worry is that the upcoming Spa development will increase its popularity, making it that much more difficult to make a booking to suit our conveniance - but that is a small price to pay for a lovely break away from home, to be able to stay somewhere so fabulous!

Room Tip: All the rooms are just beautiful, and individual. However, if you have trouble walking, do make sure...

We have just returned from a 3 night break and we couldn't fault it. The public areas are warm and inviting with log fires and tasteful decor. Lovely squashy sofas to cosy up on with afternoon tea or pre dinner drinks. Our room ( No. 38) was delightful and was an unexpected upgrade as we had booked a standard room and we ended up with a characterful suite with everything you would expect as well as little luxuries like dressing gowns, gorgeous toiletries, lovely biscuits and fresh bottled water every day. The food was really nice for both breakfast and dinner and the afternoon scones were the nicest I have ever had.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and had impeccable manners. Whatever training they have had is just right as their professionalism shone through.
The parking although across the road was not a problem at all.
We are looking forward to returning for a romantic break later in the year. We think it will be lovely just before christmas when its freezing outside and warm and cosy inside. Can't wait!!

We love this hotel out of season. It is a jumble of mostly timber framed buildings of various ages stitched together into an oasis of calm. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable, the lounges have log fires, perpetually alight, the bar serves real ale and good dry sherry. The staff are polite, helpful, friendly and inconspicuous. We stayed 2 nights in March. So why not 5 stars?

The answer is that the food is disappointing. The website and publicity make great play on the restaurant, but in our view it is no more than good gastro-pub food, but unfortunately not at gastro-pub prices. We can't eat two full evening meals on successive days,so we had tapas and wine flights in the bistro on our first evening, which was well done and enjoyable. The breakfasts no longer have any help yourself buffet, so juice, cereal and drinks are served at table. The full Suffolk breakfast though is plain mean. It seemed to have been kept warm for some time, and fried one egg does not a full breakfast make. You do get more scrambled egg, but it's not very nice.

Evening 2 we ate at The Great House.

Room Tip: Away from the central heating boiler

Had to cancel because of medical reasons - unfortunately you will lose your deposit completely if this happens even if a lot of notice is given (6 days in my case). You cant even transfer the deposit to stay another time. I presume this is in the small print somewhere. Not had this in the larger hotel chains but presume they have to protect profits. Not a good time when one of your family is sick and then one top of it you lose £60 / room.

Dissapointed.

I was in London for business, as I am regularly, and as I usually to spent the weekend in the countryside, England having the most beautiful on this planet or any other. I was drawn to Lavenham after a stay at nearby picturesque village Long Melford; I read lovely things about Lavenham on the interwebs, ditto The Swan.

Those accolades did not do justice to this unbelievably wonderful and, dare I say it, property. The Swan is a gem from stoop to roof. It's a late medieval coaching in with original half-timbers and inglenook fireplaces but with all the conveniences and comforts of "modern life." I am an utter English history nerd, and always seek out old things; but in twenty or so years of travelling in England I can say without fear of contradiction that no property has combined the ancient and the modern as successfully, or as tastefully, as the Swan. There's a wonderful and marvellously evocative smell of woodsmoke throughout; the narrow Tudor hallways open to well-appointed rooms with amazingly comfortable furnishings and showers. One could spend hours in the common areas whiling away the time with a book or a newspaper in front of a fire. This is without a doubt the "homeiest" place I've ever stayed.

As for the food -- consistently brilliant, five-stars at every turn. British classics - lamb, roast beef, steaks -- but all so fresh and prepared so incredibly well, you'll almost think yourself to be trying them for the first time. I especially recommend the Ploughman's, in the Brasserie. Add in the wonderfully helpful and courteous staff and the incredible beauty and friendlieness of the village and its residents, and the Swan is a place to return to again and again. I know -- I'm going back to England and have already booked a room there. Can't wait to bring my wife and daughter at some point.
