Swan Hotel & Spa Lavenham
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Lavenham
Certificate of Excellence

The Swan Hotel at Lavenham is steeped in history. The building is very old with origins in the 15th century. More recently, the hotel bar was a favourite place for British and US airmen in World War 2. They wrote their names, rank, squadron numbers and more, on the bar’s walls and over 70 years on these inscriptions, carefully preserved, are still visible. My wife and I stayed at the Swan - it was our first visit - for three days at the end of June. We had booked a classic double room and, after checking in, the receptionist, who was both helpful and charming, took us to our ground floor room with its oak beams and fragments of wall decorations from the distant past. The room was superb. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and spotlessly clean. We dined all three nights in the hotel’s magnificent Gallery Restaurant. The food was delicious and the service, exemplary. We look forward to returning. The Swan at Lavenham is a very special hotel!

Room Tip: Go for a classic double. You won't regret it.

We stayed here for two nights Friday to Sunday at the end of July. We were booked into a classic double room. On arrival the staff were friendly and welcoming, we were shown up to our room ('Preston Room') which appeared a little small at first but had everything we needed. The bathroom was lovely, with a big original beam running through the centre. Although the room faced the road we were not disturbed too much with noise. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, we ate last minute on Friday in the Brassiere (having attempted to eat in the greyhound and realised it was around the same price and we were the only ones there!) Brassiere had excellent atmosphere and the food and wine was lovely - the lamb being the best my friend had ever had! Saturday morning breakfast came within the room rate and was exactly what we were after - again great friendly service. Due to an early start on Sunday we checked out late Saturday, there was a slight problem with the bill but it was resolved quickly and professionally by the reception staff. As a young couple, Lavenham doesnt have too much to offer, I wouldn't recommend more than a weekend stay. Make sure to have afternoon tea in the village and a look around the church!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for a suite or four poster!

We stayed here for a long weekend, Fri to Sun mid July. On our arrival, we were told that we had been upgraded to a suite, which was a very nice surprise. The room was lovely. The hotel has a long history, and even the new extensions look authentic. Nooks and crannies everywhere! The food and service where second to none, and no request was too much trouble. There is a great piece of history in the Airmen's bar. There was a WW2 American Airbase just to the north of the village and many fliers signed their names on the wall of the bar when they were stationed there in 1942-45, and subsequently on return visits of remembrance. Fantastic history and top marks to the hotel for retaining this. We had great weather so were able to have drinks in the quiet, secluded hotel garden. Lovely glass (or 2!) of the local vineyard's rose!. Table service throughout - breakfast, lunch and dinner and also the garden. Freshly cooked breakfast, cooked to order. No cheap and cheerful warmed up buffet! Would gladly return some day and I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone. Beware however that there are no lifts. That said there is a very friendly concierge, Pete, who will gladly take your luggage to your room.

Booked at the last minute and just a standard double- the last one available. Get this. Four poster bead and sofa and easy chairs in the room- possibly the best "last standard room" I have stayed in. All the rooms are very individual and this is a lovely venue for a special weekend away.

Apart from a lovely old historic building the real gem is the customer service. Thank you email on booking detailing car parking arrangements while the spa is being built (we were not disturbed neither by noise nor visually), and offering to book dinner table. Check in very quick and efficient. Finally a hotel that gives a choice about having a turndown service! I loathe this horrible practice- once I am checked in my room is my sanctuary. When we had left things in the room after our stay they emailed immediately offering to post them on. Very comfy bed made with sheets and blankets.

Two options brasserie or a la carte restaurent (£39/head for 3 courses). We chose the latter because of the child free policy in the restaurent as grown up time was our aim in coming away. Choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and puds-a small menu that means everything is likely to be cooked on the premises and freshly prepared. Safe rather than innovative cuisine using local ingredients without scary combinations and good portion sizes (lamb, 2 fish and chicken) -enough subtle flavour combinations to be interesting. Chocolate pave with beetroot coulis needed a little peppery kick provided by a sprog of rocket. Again it was the friendly staff attitude that made the dinner- (my other pet hate in hotels is obsequious pomposity masquerading as customer service). A sommelier that know his stuff (and went and looked things up to check) and an experienced waitress that was warm and friendly. What makes a difference is staff that take pride in where they work and are properly briefed on the menu.

Breakfast is in the dining room and table service rather than buffet a nice change to communal pastries and cereals. Everything was fresh and delicious. My only complaint? My poached eggs were completely cooked through- but I had overslept and was last in to breakfast!

Room Tip: This is a very old building so expect electric fan's not aircon. We found our groundfloor room t...

Without doubt a very nice hotel.Staff are excellant. our room (number 1) is to be avoided. Not surprising that it was the last one available. Avoid this room if possible. It was VERY hot on a mild weather day, and the fan provided was needed all night. Opening the window was ineffective and opened onto a street which gives security problems. I suspect that other rooms may also be too hot as I heard one other guest voicing the same opinion. Also the bed was a normal (small) double bed which is unuasual these days. Apart from the room limitations the hotel is VERY nice. However the WIFI in the hotel and local area is very poor.
The rooms, bars and restaurent are expensive.

Room Tip: Asf for non ground floor with aircon if available.

Lovely lovely place. We knew it from a tea 30+ years ago, but had never stayed. Arrived in the rain today, but a very warm welcome, and a great room (21), followed by a long walk around the lanes, a hot bath, feet up watching tv, then dinner in the splendid dining room. The hotel is just great. To dinner. Our waitress was very well informed. To be honest, I found the restaurant menu to be very limited on main courses. Four, maybe five choices, at a push, I think. Two white fish, one chicken and something else. It all sounded bland. And very white! For this class of hotel/restaurant, in my opinion, it was boring and unadventurous. But when I told the waitress there was nothing I really wanted, she produced another menu (from the Bistro) and we found venison, and plaice, which we enjoyed, but not really memorable. Nice starters and puds. And a very good sommelier.
I would love to stay here again, but would look for somewhere more inspired to dine.

We had a lovely lunch in the Gallery restaurant. All food was tasty and fresh. Well presented and served hot. There was a good selection on the menu. The only reason I did not score 5 out of 5 was as there were 4 of us two were served at a time with a noticeable gap between the other two dishes were brought to the table. We started by having a drink in the bar full of history. And the gardens were great.
