We celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday last night at this lovely restaurant. It is such a treat to find delicious food in this part of the countryside. Just as good as an upmarket restaurant in London. Between us we enjoyed several of the well-cooked and beautifully presented dishes on the fixed menu. There were some unusual pairings e.g. brill with rhubarb and citrus jelly with dark chocolate parfait - but they all worked together wonderfully well. The service was excellent - they had even laid two tables for us, one outside in the courtyard and one inside in the more atmospheric dining room. It was quite full for a Tuesday evening - which in the country says lots for its reputation. Service was very good, helpful and attentive. Highly recommend.

I've just returned from my most recent of many visits over a couple of decades. Whether part of a large family celebration or in a group of four the welcome, service, atmosphere and food always make for a leisurely and enjoyable afternoon.

The food has clear French heritage. This time a cappuccino (frothy bisque) of spider crab with miniature toast and rouille made a lovely starter. Lemon sole with capers and tomato was a perfect fresh tasting summer main course. Puddings are aways a delight and today's apple, calvados and salted caramel confection with cinnamon ice cream was no exception. The only problem was trying to resist the amazing cheeseboard.

It is good value for the quality of food too, especially if you select from a fixed price menu.

A delightful restaurant (with very nice rooms) in an attractive old wool town.

Like a previous visitor said definitely won't be our last visit. We went for our wedding anniversary and we couldn't fault it. The service is impeccable, friendly but efficient waiters, not always asking how you're getting on every few minutes like some places but always there when needed. The food was very tasty, we had the set menu and there was a good varied choice. I had the scallops to start and then the duck and my husband had the pate and then guinea fowl which he said he would definitely have again. Our favourite though was the coffee creme brûlée… sublime but managed to bring up memories of our mums' fruit cake mix!!
There was a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and it was very easy to have a conversation. There was a small golden wedding anniversary celebration in the other side of the restaurant and it only added to the atmosphere.

We had lunch at The Great House in May. The food was of a very high order. The waiting staff made us feel relaxed and were very helpful and efficient without being over-attentive. We were also never rushed. The Great House manages to achieve this without being at all pretentious.

We also thought the lunch menu is very reasonably priced for what you get.

It was lovely to have such a great experience in such a good place. Well worth a visit.
