“Great service - costly”

Check in was handled with a smile and a genuinely warm welcome. First impressions are good - the public areas are beautiful and very inkeeping with the period of the building and it's clear that that the hotel has been renovated with great style. Lovely bar area with tables and chairs on a small terrace overlooking the green. Our room, Pommery, was on the top floor (there isn't a lift) and again the approach up the stairs is welcoming and decorated with panache - antique rocking horses and inkeeping art on the walls. The room was lovely - not huge but spacious enough and well thought through. Nice small touches like the well chosen antique furniture, art and very smart soft furnishings. Two comfortable contemporary leather chairs, a workable desk, very nice waffle dressing gowns, tea and coffee and complimentary bottled water. A very well thought through lighting scheme contollable from the bed. The bathroom was smart and large, with a powerful shower, nice decor and everything scrupulously clean -excellent housekeeping. It was a warm weekend and a large and powerful fan was provided in the absence of aircon. Windows were open and the room was nicely cool. The TV was very old, with only the 5 network channels - forget CNN or movies. No fridge, mini bar or roomservice and this would be my criticism - at £175 a night, this is London pricing in Suffolk without expected extra services. Free wifi, which was so slow as to be unusable. No option to have breakfast in bed which is a shame as the breakfast in the dining room was truly exceptional, with locally sourced produce, fantastic service, brilliant coffee and massive two course menu with fresh juices. Overall, a very pleasant two night stay with friends attending a wedding. But the price was high and in my view, unjustified. Lovely surroundings, beautiful decor, a highly respected restaurant, but at this price level I would expect a minibar, roomservice and cable TV on a flatscreen - but these are small niggles in comparison with excellent service and a fab location in a stylish boutique hotel.

We visit this part of the world very often, and our stopover of choice is normally hintlesham hall, which is a real treat for dinner b&b. Hintlesham was fully booked, so we chose the The Black Lion at Long Melford. It was a very pleasant change, the warm welcome was genuine, the room very comfortable, with excellent food and friendly high quality service from all the staff. This is a place you can really relax, we found ourselves chatting happily with other guests over drinks in the lounge, before enjoying a nice meal for 55 pounds plus drinks (2 people). Sunday breakfast was particularly sumptious, with home made muesli following by smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, delicious!
We would be very happy to stay again and recommend to all.

We booked this hotel looking for a hotel with four poster beds, and we were not dissapointed.
The staff including the Manager Michael were friendly throught our stay, offering advice on places to go and see.
The Room we stayed in (Chablis, Room 1) was huge and very well decorated, the bed was lovely, the bathroom excellent. The room was located over the bar, yet we never heard a single noise. It was warm and snug.
The Food is superb, well presented and delicous, not to forget the excellent choice for breakfast.

Overall the hotel is really nice, I'd reccomend it to anyone looking for a nice romantic and relaxing get away.

Thank you Michael and thnak you Black Lion.

I stayed at the Black Lion with my partner and I have to say it's one of the best hotels I have stayed at. The welcome we got was fantastic, the recptionist was bright, cheerful and gave us lots of advice on places to visit (she even googled maps for us and offered to arrange transport for us!)
When we arrived we were greeted by an adorable dog, aptly name Melford. he was clam and friendly and all the guests seemed to love him.
As we had booked dinner, bed and breakfast we dined at the hotel. The food was amazing a had such a range to choose from. I now often go to eat there and am impressed everytime by the inventive and ever changing menu. The staff we prompt and attentive without being over bearing, and nothing was too much trouble, especially for the manager who made our stay everything we hoped it would be and more. Everyone is so friendly here its very hard not to real totally at ease and part of the Black Lion "family". Thank you all so much and we will be back again soon

We stayed on a sunday night when the special offer makes this hotel very good value indeed. However, we would not have been unhappy to pay full price as we had an amazing experience and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others (we have already told lots of people how great our stay was!)

The staff were welcoming and friendly. We adored Melford, the resident dog and spent lots of time cuddling him. We stayed in the 'Pommard' room which has an extraordinary comfortable bed, a good firm matress and is a decent size which was great as my husband is quite tall.

The whole hotel, bar, restaurant and room are beautifully decorated, cosy and comfortable. The room has all the facilities you would expect. The shower is to die for!!!

The food was delicious - they perhaps present the food in a slightly fussy way but it was tasty, plentiful and served without delay. We had a lovely bottle of wine (nr 79) and ate our meal next to a roaring fire.

There was minimal road noise and the room was snuggle and warm.
Set under a mile from the village centre with its antique shops and restaurants, this hotel is set in an enviable location with lovely views over the suffolk countryside.

Perfect for a romantic getaway.

We booked one room in particular on website as a mini romatic break and to see some mates but when we got there we were given a gloomy room which were not happy about, when i say gloomy just not to our taste.

Manager was really accomodating and a total angel, offered us to look at other room which was beautiful, gave us half price due to the goof up and champers, what more could you ask for. And when our cab did not turn up to take us to our party the manager drove us down road even though he was super busy.

Amazing customer service, amazing staff and just lovely atmosphere. I will defo stay there again as our friends live locally.
