I selected The Black Lion Hotel on the basis of other Trip Advisor reviews and was not disappointed. The welcome and explanations from Michael were excellent, and the friendly and chatty dinner service from Michael and Nikki in the warm and comfortable bar surroundings was wonderful. The festive menu choices were good and the venison starter (locally sourced meat) was exceptional. The Sancerre feature room was well-appointed and decorated, with only minor issues (chipped bath and a dripping tap) that one could overlook due to the biggest fluffiest bath towels I've seen! All round good value for money in my opinion. Only light sleepers are likely to be disturbed by any road noise. ......And the rocking horses are amazing!

Room Tip: Sancerre (Room 2) is on the corner of a major and a side road, but still probably the best room in t...

Myself, husband and two friends spent last night at the Black Lion on a travel zoo voucher. When we arrived in the afternoon we were welcomed and shown to our rooms by a very friendly receptionist. We had the Barollo room which although it fronted two sides of the road junction did not cause us any road noise problems. The cream tea, especially the compote, was excellent and we were given refills of scones and cream. The tasting menu was really good and the food was plentiful and varied. Again nothing was too much trouble for the staff who looked after us very well. After a good nights sleep we had a thoroughly enjoyable breakfast which again covered a wide choice. Although some aspects of the hotel were a bit shabby somehow it fitted the whole ambience and character of the place.

We wanted to stay near to Glemsford and on ringing the Black Lion Hotel we were told the only room available was one of their expensive "featured" rooms (room 8). The price first quoted was too much for our budget, but they slashed this to £125 per night.

However, the room wasn't of a standard we expected. The overall cleanliness was disappointing.

We were very disappointed with our stay. The staff were very good, but their cleaners should do a better job preparing the room... We couldn't believe what we found when we tried to use the toilet brush.

I would've rather stayed at a premier inn.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this small, friendly boutique hotel. The 10 rooms are all individually decorated and furnished with atmospheric style. Our 1 night deal consisted of a lovely afternoon Kir Royal cream tea followed by an evening 6 course taster menu, which was of an excellent quality. The staff too deserve praise for the excellent service provided. Breakfast the next day was of a high standard and finished off our delightful stay perfectly.

I have never written a review but felt compelled to do so after a wonderful stay recently at the Black Lion. From the moment I phoned to reserve a room I had a good feeling about the place, and during our stay this was confirmed over and over again. The staff are just lovely, the rooms are fabulous, each with a different decor or theme if you like (had a bit of a nose around!) from winter cosy to spacious summer airiness. The manager, Michael Ruthven is such a nice chap, extremely helpful and accommodating, and although we didn't have to test the theory as everything was hunky dory, I think nothing would be too much trouble. We had an excellent lunch too, all in all it was very refreshing to stay somewhere where the reality was far far better than the expectation. No grumbles, a great night away.

Enjoyed a one night stay, also on Travel Zoo voucher. Food was very good and staff were friendly and service excellent. Breakfast was particularly memorable. Like other reviewers we really liked the style and atmosphere in the Long Melford Bar. When we first arrived and discovered we would be eating in there, rather than the restaurant, we were disappointed but this was completely misplaced. It is a really lovely place to eat, where as the restaurant (not used during our stay) looked rather sterile and soul less and in decor seemed out of keeping with the warmth and cosyness of the rest of the hotel.

Room Tip: Hotel is on a junction but we were not disturbed by traffic noise

I booked the Black Lion for my partner`s birthday , having stayed at the hotel some 10 years ago, and stopped off for breakfast 3 years ago, and on both occasions was very impressed.
We had a great weekend this Oct. `13, due to excellent service, good food and a warm, friendly atmosphere. Michael, the hotel manager, was very obliging, helpful and understanding.
The food is very good, portions a little on the small side, but beautifully cooked and presented.
We just felt our room, The Tokay room, could have had a bigger double bed, and was in need of a bit of re-decorating. But it is a lovely hotel with bags of charm and character, and I would always recommend it to friends and family.

Room Tip: Sancerre suite is lovely.
