“Fabulous Weekend - nothing was too much trouble (even lift home for brother)”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

Second time staying at Black Lion in past few months, as many of family in local area and we enjoyed last stay in November.
This time we stayed two nights in Chablis Room with lovely views out over green toward Melford Hall.
First night we booked the "Chefs Special Evening" with cream teas on arrival, Kir Royal before a six course tasting menu dinner that was all superb.
Michael and all his staff on over the Mother's Day weekend were busy, but still nothing was too much trouble (see below).
After lovely breakfast we visited local family members and returned for a delightful a-la-carte dinner with younger brother and to round off the excellent service the barman even gave them a lift home at midnight as taxis were sparce!
Real service.
Looking forward to returning on next visit to see family!
Many thanks

We have just returned from a weekend at the Black Lion. Had a lovely break, staff were fantastic as was the food. When I wanted to mix and match my evening meal this was no problem. Will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter

Very pleasant little Inn. Our room had amazing views of Melford Hall and the beautiful Suffolk Countryside. We ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and they were both of excellent quality with good vegetarian options. The decor was country comfortable downstairs with a roaring fire and although a little kitsch, not too bad in the bedroom (although one of the bed posts needs securing as it waved frighteningly!) The staff were friendly and very polite. My only criticism is that the cleaning is not up to scratch. There was a lot of dust and dirt in the bathroom round the skirting and the radiator, there was no bin liner and the cobwebs in the corner near the bed were truly a sight to be seen in the lamplight. Cleaning staff need a nudge but other than that very comfortable and we had a happy time here.

Room Tip: The views from the front are amazing but maybe not for warm evenings as it is on the road, there is...

A Two Day break that was very relaxing. Beautiful Room with Excellent staff attention.
Nothing was to much trouble. Food of good quality served in a restaurant with pleasant
surroundings. The Chef knows his stuff. Special mention for Nikki - the perfect host.

Will be back again. Thankyou.

This was an absolutely delightful hotel. Great staff, very helpful and friendly. Great room as well. Good price. And it is located in a quiet part of time, near the beautiful church. It has a great restaurant, and there is another almost next door (Scutchers). I would HIGHLY recommend the Black Lion.

Booked in for a two night break as our usual Long Melford Hotel was fully booked. This was a far superior experience. The hotel is elegantly furnished and decorated but not in that 'overdone/over coordinated' boutique style that can feel a little sterile. The moment you enter the establishment, you are made to feel welcome by Michael and his excellent team. The place is warm and inviting and the room we stayed in (no.7) was lovely with excellent views over the green. We ate in the restaurant on both nights and the food was superb. The staff were attentive and professional but not obtrusive. The hotel has a lovely resident dog - a labradoodle called Melford - who is absolutely fantastic and just adds to the homely feel of the establishment. Don't let the 'dog friendly' status of the hotel put you off. You really wouldn't know that dogs were welcome - the housekeeping ensures this and only certain rooms are made available for pets. This is one of the best places we have stayed in (if not the best) and we can't wait to return.
