We have just spent christmas at The Black Lion and I have to say it has been the best ever!

From the moment we checked in with all our luggage (and our dog max in tow) the service and ambience was perfect. We were shown up to our room (not before we had been offered refereshments and help with our mountain of bags) which was comfortable and luxurious (if a little warm).

All the food we ate during our stay of three nights was perfect and afternoon tea was a particular favourite of my husband.

Staff were always attentive and friendly and immediately made us feel at home. Nothing is too much trouble. And the fact that pets are welcomed in all rooms and at no extra cost is a bonus.

All in all an amazing experience, we will go back time and time again.

Great hotel, great food and great service. If you want a weekend of doing nothing and getting spoilt in a homely and relaxed environment, then this is for you! Makes a nice change from the Marriott / Hilton style weekends and you'll enjoy going somewhere a bit different.

Book the Sancerre suite for a huge bed and a separate living area.

There is not a huge amount to do in Long Melford but you can drive out to the like of Cambridge etc should you wish. It made a nice change for us to simply potter along the high st, enjoy a cream tea and read the papers.

We ate in the hotel one evening and then for a change of scenery ate at a restaurant called Scutchers which is 50yds from the hotel. In both cases the food was excellent.

Highly recommended!

We decided to book a break at the black lion because of an article in the Sunday Mail and are we delighted we did! From the moment of arrival, the setting is so pretty being sandwiched between 2 beautiful tudor stately homes we were sold. On arrival we were welcomed and decided to try the chefs special cream tea, well Annettes amazing homemade compote is to die for! Her expertise with dinner shone through too it was a delight. The wine list was first class as we enjoy trying unusual wines. Our room the Sancerre suite had a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us as my husband had previously organised it for our anniversary( the hotel had put a delightful congrautalions and welcoming letter to us which we thought very kind). Our room overlooked the green and was light and airey, the bed was high with drapes and the lounge had a cd and comfy sofa which we enjoyed relaxing in before dinner.
The staff were so helpful they made the visit so pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. We walked into the delightful village of Long Melford and enjoyed the antique and craft shops. I must also mention our dog Charlie was spoilt to death, she was patted and cuddled when she joined us in the bar and lounge over the period of our stay. To say they are pet friendly is an under statement.
All in all this was a perfect break and we would recommend it to anyone.

The Black Lion Hotel in Long Melford was a very enjoyable experience. The hotel and the guest rooms are beautifully decorated, with robe and slippers for each guest and very large, plush towels in the bath.
For the reader, there's a bookcase full of books on the second floor. Read at leisure, but be sure to return the books to the hotel when you leave.
All the food was of gourmet quality and delicious. There's a lounge downstairs that serves all types of beverages and is very comfortable, having couches and overstuffed chairs to relax in. We found out that the lounge and restaurant attracts residents from all over the area, so we could sit and chat with the locals.
The staff is courteous and attentive, never too rushed to give residents the care they need, although there were times when they were very busy.
The Black Lion is going to be our preferred destination whenever we come back to this part of England.
