We recently stayed a night to attend a wedding on the premises, but I'm not sure we'd stay again. It's a lovely hotel, rich in history...which is fantastic. And to give credit where credit is due, the bride and groom seemed extremely pleased with how smoothly their day played out. Everything fell into place. As it should be. The wedding meal was decent. The staff assisting with the wedding seemed helpful and friendly. The staff elsewhere in the hotel, not so much. My husband stood at the bar to order a pint for nearly 10 minutes, with a queue accumulating behind him, before a surly bartender finally turned up and grouchily started serving drinks. The next morning, the waitress in the breakfast room was apparently in need of a cup of coffee herself, as she was equally irritable. The wedding guests who had also stayed over were all seated together on one side of the room and several empty tables were available on the other side. There were only a few scattered seats open amongst the guests, so we opted for a table on the other side, where we could sit together with plenty of room for a high seat for our baby. When the waitress came over, she abruptly asked "Are you with them?", gesturing to the wedding party. "Then you need to sit over there." Now, I understand wanting to ensure there are enough tables for all hotel guests, but we're a family of four and there weren't four seats together available on the other side. What exactly are we supposed to do? March over and ask two tables full of people to kindly collect their breakfasts and play musical chairs so we can sit with our children? She grumbled something along the lines of "Well, since you're already settled in, you might as well stay there." The breakfast itself was...eh. As for our room, it was fine for the most part. However, we were greeted by a large dead spider in the middle of the floor when we walked in. To be fair, it's England, it's getting to be that time of year...and at least it was already dead. Fair enough. It was still a bit disconcerting, though, because the spare "bed" that had been set up for our son was actually a wooden platform with a mattress that sat directly on the floor. In all, it was an okay place, but between the grouchy staff and our child sleeping with the creepy crawlies, I think we'll look elsewhere for accommodation should we find ourselves out that way again.
