“An Absolute Dump - Would have been OK in 1971”
Reviewed 23 January 2013

If you are old enough to remember the 70's and fancy a trip back in time, this is the place for you.

After checking in the first thing to greet you is the lift, don't look for a lift door, more a painted white door which might just fool you. When it clangs to a halt you can walk in and marvel at the 'publicity' pictures showing the option of meeting and wedding venue rooms.........you will be getting a bit worried now!!

Walk along the corridors, which look like they were once outside but now inside, and enjoy the overpowering smell of sterilising fluids (think old peoples home and you are close).

Then behold, you open you door and the real treat begins, for me, the brown sink and avocado bath were the highlight.

Anyway, pictures speak a thousand words so i leave you some to judge for yourself.

Asking for a room that isn't 30-40 years wrong, was fruitless.

Come back again? Well there are plenty of horses in Newmarket, perhaps there are enough wild ones to drag me back......................but i doubt it.

One night stop over in some wintry conditions, snow and ice. The Hotel was comfortable and warm. The whole place is a little tired and needs some renovation. The dinner menu was limited but the fish and chips were good! The staff were friendly and helpful.
OK for a one night stay.

The hotel is in the middle of town so easy access to the pubs and restaurants nearby. There is free parking available and we did not have any issues findng a space.

The hotel is old and in need of updating but was clean and tidy; the staff welcoming and friendly. My only niggle was that I was allocated a room which had an internal window (i.e it overlooked the corridor rather than outside) which meant that you couldn't leave the window open for ventilation and with the heating on it was a bit stuffy!

Breakfast was ok with prompt service and a reasonable selection.
Free wifi was available and worked fine for me.

I'd stay here again but would probably look to try some of the other local hotels first as a comparison.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outside window

Stayed there for 2 nights and was allocated a very basic room with no external window . As an asthma sufferer I asked for a room with a window that I could open. The receptionist could not have been more pleasant and immediately upgraded me to a bigger room.
The hotel is quite run down but is well located with parking... But does have a good welcome

Had to head down here for a funeral and due to the fact that horse sales were on we were very lucky to get booked. Not cheap but we had stayed previously and were so happy we invited the entier family for lunch. This time welcome on reception was very good and next morning in the breakfast room service was excellent, great choice and fried eggs to order. Asked twice if all was ok and waitress even made more toast for us. Very happy. Next morning went to breakfast asked for fried eggs, as they were cooked to order, and waited quite a long time as no one else in breakfast room. Well the eggs arrived, they were completely burnt, hard yolks, burst all over. I asked if the chef was in a bad mood...no reply then we looked at the cremated sausage bacon and fried bread...strangely enough no one asked how things were. I spoke to the helpful receptionist as we left to advise her and ensure the manager would be made aware. True to her word I had a call from the manager, Robert, who was very nice and handled the entire thing very well. That is the reason for the very good. We intend to return and feel confident this complaint of mine has been very well addresses. Excelent front of house and management team

Cast your mind back 25 years and this hotel was top of the tree in Newmarket, but now it's the Pit's of a Place and has recently declined to the bottom of the barrel. Gone are the days of fine dining, a full restaurant and a buzzing bar, now the bar shutters a down by 10.45 pm and if you want a drink the staff think your daft, if you want a Gin & Tonic there's no ice or lemon and it's served in a tall tumbler and it's take it or leave it, well, we'll leave it thank you.

The rooms are tiny and very very dated, my tv was hanging off the wall, the window in the room had been glazed over and could not be opened it's like being in a prison cell, the bathroom was Avocado green very 80's the shower ran hot and cold and hot and cold and cold and hot, the loo worked ok though.

A word of praise for the cleaners for keeping the place clean and a special mention for the handiman who must be on 24 hour call just to keep the place going, also the reception staff who in the circumstances are amazingly helpful and cheerful.

The place wants bulldosed to the ground and start again, to get back to the good old days.

Do Not Stay Here.
