“Horses for courses”
5 of 5 bubbles Review of The National Stud

The National Stud

Attraction details
Owner description: The National Stud remains the only commercial stud farm in the UK allowing individuals, small groups and large parties the chance to see behind the scenes of a working Thoroughbred stud farm. Tours of The National Stud, run by Discover Newmarket, last approximately 90 minutes and are taken by coach and on foot. The tours focus on introducing visitors to the history and purpose of The National Stud as a commercial Thoroughbred breeding operation. The National Stud is a working commercial stud farm, so the physical content of the tours varies throughout the year, depending on the season and the activities happening on the stud when you visit.

It was a last minute decision to take the tour and so pleased we did. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and you take a bus trip around the stud farm to get up close to the mares and foals (depending on the season), see the stallions (you can’t touch them) and where all the action takes place. Our guide, Vicky, knew her stuff and was very engaging and happy to answer all our questions. Don’t worry, you’re not all sat on a bus the whole time - the stud is so large that it is the easiest way of being transported around.

I’m not particularly into horses or horse racing but it was certainly an incredibly interesting insight into the world of horse breeding.

“National Stud”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

I love the National Stud, this was a return visit. The guide was excellent and the young overworked staff in the café charming and cheerful.. The cafe is my criticism : There were two large coach parties queuing in the café. It seemed only one was actually on a tour of the stud. There were notices on several tables "reserved." Notices everywhere make it very clear only food bought on the premises to be consumed. If the National Stud is going to make these rules then monitor the arrival of large coach parties as they make access to the café very uncomfortable for members of the public who have paid and booked on tours.

“Excellent tour of UK thoroughbred breeding facility”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

We loved this tour as breeders & racehorse owners in Australia. Although much of the tour information included basic knowledge we already knew, it was amazing to see the program's/set up of an international stud. Our tour guide Malcolm was great & explained everything extremely well on the 1.5hr tour around the 500 acre National Stud. Well worth a visit for those that only have even a passing interest in the thoroughbred race horse. Staff were extremely helpful as a whole. Great half day out as the tours start at either 11am or 2pm

Do not drive through Newmarket without a visit to the National Stud. Small coach supplied to drive visitors around also some walking to view the new foals with their mothers. It was great to pat Amberleigh House and feed him polos, what a gentle stallion. It is a fascinating place and the guide was very informative, friendly and funny.

Tour lasts for approx. 90 minus. Great café on site. .

Well worth a visit

“Brilliant Place to visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

What a fantastic place to see, we timed it perfectly to go on one of their guided tours, which is undertaken by their own transport and does involve some walking. The tour was well priced and lasted for a good hour and a half. Seeing the mares and foals at this time of year is a real treat. The cafe there provided delicious home made sandwiches on decent bread. Their cakes are all home made as well and tasted delicious. Not overpriced either. Well worth a visit.
