“bar service”
Reviewed 12 August 2012

a social visit to the bar as visiting relatives in newmarket revealed the female member of staff was not aware of what a gin and tonic was.the gin and tonic was served up by a male member of the bar without ice and without lemon although requested-a look of indifference from the barman.another drink ordered was a small bottle of becks and provided wlth a pint glass(unclean).

We have recently taken on several new staff for the summer, and they are still in the process of being trained, therefore we apologise if the service was not up to our normal standards and we will ensure that re-training of existing staff happens alongside the training of our new staff. As you can see from Previous reviews we are normally complimented on our customer service and friendliness – so we apologise that on this occasion it fell short.

it would be a great shame if this building was over-modernised. It certainly needs some sprucing up, but with care to maintain its attractive features, e.g. the breakfast room. Re-carpeting may be a costly and massive 'ask' in these straitened times, though it would be a big improvement. First impressions of the hotel, the courtyard leading to the main entrance, are of a scruffy and run-down establishment. For very little expenditure - a gardener for a few days - the plants could be pruned, weeds and moss removed, and a few low-maintenance plants added. Sweeping the dog-ends and crisp packets from underfoot, and clearing the tables of filled ashtrays, dirty glasses and used crockery cannot be difficult. It would make a huge difference.

That said, the staff were friendly and efficient. The location's fine for the town-centre shops. The car park is free and close. Our room was, on a cheap offer, very adequate, though some bozo had left the trouser-press on, in August, emitting heat, wasting electricity (chambermaid hadn't checked the sockets). We only had breakfast there, no other meals, which was standard stuff.

Room Tip: Overlooking the courtyard may be quieter than street-side.

I am sorry to hear that the Courtyard was not an inviting first impression of the hotel, we do try hard to keep it tidy and litter free in order to create a nice first impression, although we do take on board your comments about the weeds- it has been very difficult this year to schedule the gardening time for our maintenance team as the weather has been difficult to predict and it is not a small job, also with the sudden change to sunny weather it appears all the weeds have just popped up – I will however make this a priority for the team this week in order to make it a more inviting environment.

We stayed here for the races last night and the hotel is in a brilliant location to be able to visit the race course. I have to say that the staff are brilliant but the hotel leaves much to be desired especially having to pay the inflated prices of race nights. The hotel needs complete refurbishment and our room was very small with half painted walls and a damp bathroom with old fittings, in fact I think there was more paint on the lights and the window frame than on the walls. We went to bed only to be woken up twice by the fire alarms going at 3.30am and even during breakfast they were constantly going off !! Annoying to say the least. My recommendation is to avoid this hotel at all costs and instruct the chef how to cook poached eggs.... Not hard boiled poached!!

Dear Guest we are extremely sorry that your stay was disrupted by the fire alarm – unfortunately a guest set this off as they returned to their room and we then experienced problems with resetting the alarms, as a result of this alarm going off, rather than guests coming down gradually for breakfast we experienced an unprecedented rush at breakfast, which may have led to the quality of breakfast suffering, as we normally receive compliments about our breakfasts.

We stayed over on Saturday after a race day and I thought the hotel was lovely. It's the first time I'd gone to the races, loved it and the hotel added to the experience with paintings of racehorses on the walls etc, had a real feel of racehorse history. Lots of old beams, higgledy piggledy corridors, really quaint. Beautiful courtyard, you could imagine the old horse drawn coaches arriving years ago. The receptionists on our welcome and checkout were so friendly and helpful. The room was very nice and welcoming, overlooking the courtyard, clean, lovely white linen, no problems at all. Breakfast was perfect, a good selection offered. Yes, it may be a little tired here and there, but that just added to the charm. Highly recommended.

Staff very friendly and location is good. But the hotel room and the public areas, especially the bar area have seen better days. Put off from trying the restaurant by the state of the bar.

We have just returned from this hotel after staying for a race night. This is the 2nd time we have been invited guests so glad we were not the ones paying the bill! The sorry plight of this hotel is woeful - such a shame with the historical importance of the building. Although the staff do their best and are as accomodating as possible it must be very difficult to be cheerful when the hotel standards and decor are so abysmal.
Our room (unfortunately a standard, miles from reception over the car park) was very old fashioned, the carpet was nearly threadbare and the bathroom looked like a health hazard. The bed was a small double - awful for couples used to a large bed!! However all sheets were clean and presentable. The rooms on that wing are very hot, windows tiny, ventilation non existent. Noise from early deliveries or whatever it was came early in the morning. The fan supplied by the hotel was so noisy it was impossible to have on when trying to sleep.
We saw a few other rooms when leaving (nearer to reception) which are a much better standard and better decorated. Fair enough if paying a lot more for them but the standard rooms on the far wing really should be closed down until they can be refurbished to a habitable standard. The staff do their best to keep them clean but it must be a thankless task.
Breakfast was reasonable and our order came promptly with cheery staff. However the trays the staff were using to bring plates of food were extremely dirty - surely they could use a bit of gumption and wipe off bits of food and spillages before serving the next guest!! Several bowls were nearly empty and were not to be replenished.
The best feature of this hotel is its location and proximity to the race track and its historical significance - not much else I'm sorry to say. The owners should think of some serious investment to keep this hotel's head above water..

We have just returned from celebrating our ruby wedding anniversary at this hotel. It is one of only 5 original coaching inns and looks as if it has never changed. l found myself trying to imagine life through the ages and wanted ' Time Team ' or an historical architect to explain the features and changes to me. The staff are wonderful, welcoming, efficient and charming. We really enjoyed our dinner and breakfast. The one caveat l would add, is that we went on a hot,
humid, Saturday race day. Our lovely old room overlooked the high street and it was extremely noisy with the window open ( due to the heat ). They have 46 rooms so you could request a quiet one. It was not apparent when we checked in at 6pm but very obvious later on. Finally, thanks to all the staff for making our anniversary a special one.

Room Tip: During summer on a Saturday night ask for a quiet room unless you want to party or love nice live mu...
