Being born in Dorking I was always up and down both Box Hill and Ranmore with our dogs. Now, even though having moved away, it is still a superb place to visit. From minnow fishing by the Stepping Stones to exploring the old fort and tower at the top, this area offers everything from peace & tranquillity, to extreme action with cycling, night walks to see bats and badgers and general sightseeing. Unless a fan of motorbikes, avoid the bottom car parks on Sundays and Bank holidays, as there are hundreds of bikes on show (used to ride myself in my younger years)! Midweek is quieter and you have many choices of refreshment - the café at the top of Box Hill offers decadent cakes, cream teas and so on, whilst Rykers at the bottom is your typical long lost and loved motorway café - superb for a bit of grease if that's your poison (yum yum)!! When crossing the Stepping Stones, keep an eye on the roots of the trees to your right, where you will see some massive chub - always reaching out for a careless fly, but seemingly never to be caught by the anglers!

Box hill has always and still is a great walking spot. Managed well by the National Trust, it has plenty of different types of walk and today we did the family nature walk. Loads of fun in the woods, with things to climb, old trees to walk over, dens to make and a new rope swings. As well as that there is a good little NT cafe and of course great views.

The roads there get busy especially since it has become a Mecca for cyclist since the Olypmic road races! Still worth a visit and just plan sensibly.

I went here with my husband and 20 months old daughter. Going up the hill was so tiring but so much fun and really great views. My daughter got tired so had to carry her most of the journey which wasn't very easy. But we really loved it :)

We were pleasantly surprised at how well but discretely NT have provided car parking and visitor centre/facilities. That plus the very helpful advice offered from the car park caravan in terms of which were the most appropriate walking routes/vistas made it a great afternoon. The stepping stone path is worth it if you want to visit the river the hard way (i counted 260 steps!) and it can be combined with a less strenuous woodland walk around the summit with great views to the South and West. Its a mecca for cyclists (especially post 2012) and one day i hope to forgo the car and make it up that way too...
