This is the second time we have been here, the staff are very attentive and welcoming, the setting is great with great walks close by. Food is home cooked and very good.
It's make a change to have a pub like this nowadays.
Thanks, see you again soon.

The Volunteer is tucked into a cosy valley in the Surrey Hills, west of Dorking between Leith Hill and the North Downs, south of the A25, in the ancient hamlet of Sutton Abinger with its whitewashed cruck-framed houses. A stream runs past, with outside seating facing it alongside the car park and in a garden further up the slope to the north. There is an outside chessboard by the stream.

The food is excellent; the mains are mostly English in style (though there was also a Thai stir-fry on the board). For £9.95 per serving we both had generous portions of lion of pork with apple mash and vegetables that was definitely not out of a frozen catering pack. Others in our group had the fish pie - also reported excellent - for £12.95. Our 2 mains, a pint of Badger and a grapefruit juice, cost us £25.40. Pretty mainstream for (prosperous) rural south Surrey, and above average in quality. The fact that reservations are recommended suggests there is a faithful clientele that keeps coming back - as we do.

In winter a log fire is a welcome attraction after an invigorating (or damp!) walk.

Went in there for a couple of drinks and thought the waitress was joking when she told me the prices. A pint of coke was £3.70, and 2 pints of Guinness and a small bottle of beer over £12. Cannot understand how this place is still open with these prices. Would only recommend you to come here if you want to be completely fleeced of all your money.

Very good food. The fish pie was special. It felt like a real pub and not a restaurant conversion with no heart. Service was good, the atmosphere was good and the food was good. What more could you want so I will be returning. It was a Friday lunchtime and quite crowded so i would recommend making a reservation.
