Owner description: Be prepared to be moved, this is no ordinary tour. The Spike in Guildford is unique, the last remaining of over 600 in the country with its stone-breaking/wood-chopping cells showing how you could have paid for a night's kip. Ever picked Oakum? Find out how. Open on Tuesdays and Saturdays only, tours start at 10a.m. and finish 4p.m., taking approximately 90 minutes, including a short film. £4.50/£3.50. I had an afternoon tour of the spike today, it was fascinating to learn how the poor were treated back at the turn of the last century. It really makes you appreciate the easy life we have today. I would highly recommend a visit. A special thank you must go to David and Sarah the volunteer staff who conducted the tour, for sharing their knowledge and making me fell welcome.

“Morning Visit Out Of The Rain Jill &Andy from Guildford”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

We visited the Spike and was most impressed, as the tour guide was friendly and very informative. There was lots to see, and we were able to wander round at our leisure too. Well worth the visit, and good value.

“Cheam Probus Club visit to The Spike, Guildford”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

Our group of 34 members from Cheam Probus Club visited by prior arrangement and were warmly welcomed by John Redpath and his colleagues. Ahead of our tour we enjoyed an excellent ploughman's lunch of cheese, ham and bread followed by fruit and trifle for desert served by friendly and attentive staff. We then had a knowledgeable and entertaining guide as we toured the building. The Spike, which is a charity, provides an informative and at times chilling insight into the plight of some of Society's least fortune in the late 19th / early 20th century. There is also small but well stocked museum of local nursing from WW1 to the present day. All in all an excellent visit and highly recommended.

“Afternoon Visit”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We visited in a pre-booked group of a dozen and were impressed by the knowledgeable, interesting and witty guide. They are still trying to collect bits and pieces of memorabilia but there is sufficient to make the place look genuine, including the small museum of nursing etc 1st World War to the present day. Well worth listening for a bit of history.

“Hidden Gem”

Went on a recommendation from a friend - didn't regret it. Very interesting view into part of Guildford's past. Reasonably short tour, but you get to see the majority of it.
