“Tranquility in the middle of Guildford”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2013

This is a National Trust place which is situated next to the Cricket Ground. It is where the River Wey navigation which linked Guildford to London is. You can take a river trip which is narrated by the skipper and tells you the history of the navigation and all about Guildford. They have various sizes of boats so get a smaller one if you want a more intimate voyage, it costs £3.50 for the trip along with the entrance fee. They have a very small gift shop and a tea room as well, it;s just about perfect on a lovely sunny summers day.

This National Trust site offers an inexpensive half hour tour of the canal, with commentary, well worth taking

“Nice bit of histrory kept alive by the National Trust.”

Dapdune Wharf is located close to the centre of Guildford but you wouldn’t know it when wandering around the exhibits and walking the River Wey tow paths which are accessible from here.
The visitors area provides a very interesting display of the history of Dapdune Wharf and associated history of the Wey barges that were built here to work the navigation to London. The location also provides a pleasant walk along the tow path and a decent tea room when you return. And then if you have time there is the option of a very relaxing boat trip on the River Wey on an electric boat into the centre of Guildford that takes about 35 – 40 minutes during which you are given an informative talk from the driver on the history of the waterway.
There is a small charge to visitor centre for non NT members which I believe is £3.50 or around £9 for a family of four as children seemed to be well catered for with fact sheets to fill in and child friendly touch and feel exhibits in the various wharf buildings. Then if you want to take the electric boat trip into Guildford, that is an additional £3.50 to all (chargeable for NT members as well), but at less than the price that a pint subsequently cost me later in the evening in the riverside White House Pub that the boat serenely glides past when in the centre, it was well worth is.

“Hidden Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

A fascinating piece of our history, and a wonderful quiet place to relax. Wander around the site beside the River Wey Navigation, picnic in a lovely haven, or take a 35 minute trip in an electric boat, while the skipper explains about this unique piece of history. A gem of a find!
