Guidlford castle is pretty much a ruin, but is very atmospheric. the gardens around the castle are beautifully kept and it is a delight to wander round this quiet enclacve right in the centre of Guildford.
If you visit make sure you fine the "Alice through the looking-glass" sculpture nearby - head out of the casle grounds downhill and turn left to the gardens behind the row of houses. It is again interesting - I didn't know of the connection between Lewis Carroll, Alice and Guidlford, but all is explained on the information board nearby

Guildford Castle consists of a free public garden containing ruined elements of outer defences and an early medieval donjon which can be entered for a fee.
The ruined elements within the garden include a large section of what may have been a royal hall and solar along with some earthworks and parts of the outer defences and gate. The gardens were well kept, filled with interesting and beautiful flowers, and provided with many benches.
The donjon tower is of a typical late Norman style but with some later modifications including brick mullioned windows on the highest surviving level. It recently had major improvements and restoration work done to it. There is a small fee to enter the tower which internally has 2 floors and a stairway to an observation level at the castle's highest point.
The ground floor has a pay desk and some information about the history of castle. The staff member was excellent and I bought a guidebook.
The first floor (accessed by an exterior stair) was recently given a roof and well restored. It has the three mural chambers (two of which can be entered) and access to the observation level by a spiral stair.
The observation level is secured by a metal cage and is very safe. It gives great views over the gardens and Guildford town. There is also a small roof-garden that can be seen but not directly accessed.
Great value for money and well worth a visit.

The castle is quiet the sight, it is the gardens and surrounding grounds that win you over! So well maintained all year round and as a result always worth a visit.
