Been several times, always a friendly greeting and it's so refreshing that dogs are welcome too. Good log fire and the food is excellent and value for money. Happily recommend this if you're in the area.

Friends and I regularly visit The Red Lion and have always found a friendly welcome is guaranteed complete with log fire and even the Christmas spirit was tastefully reflected in their decorations . We ate at the pub for the first time since the new publicans arrived and enjoyed an excellent meal which included the veggie option.
We would not hesitate in recommending a visit and will certainly be returning ourselves very soon.

Booked and went with 2 friends. Not welcoming told where our table was, not given menus etc had to ask....ok they were busy! Starters ok mine which was the most expensive was cold calamari served with mayonnaise not aoli as stated.mains a disaster ordered wrongly placed and so not enough fish pie so had to choose again and we had waited then over half an hour. We did get the cheap egg and chips free.husband and friend had game pie which had NO taste could have been anything only good thing was the bread and butter pudding. Not an altogether experience.

New-ish management and they've got off to a bad start. We went for a quick Thursday lunch, and were warned there might be a 30 minute wait. We were prepared for that, but not the 45 minutes it eventually took them to produce two mediocre plates of ham egg and chips. Beer was OK, but the staff were rather off-hand. While we were eating, a couple at a neighbouring table made a comment to the staff that their sandwiches were granary bread, which they had specifically not asked for, and there then followed basically an argument between them and the manageress (I assume) over whether this was different to previous experience. It transpired that another table in the room had been delivered still-frozen scampi.

Summary - OK for beer, food slow and not very good, staff a disaster.

Thank you for your comments on trip adviser. We are sorry you did not enjoy your experience on the 12th December having had 6 such positive reviews on trip advisor before your comments about staff and quality of food. Unfortunately trying to have a “quick lunch” in one of the busiest months of the year can be a challenge to any good pub/restaurant especially when customers have not booked. We are able to advise times when booking are taken so to avoid congestion and not have 40 customers turning up at once and having a long wait. The Red Lion is improving the quality of our food so freshly cooked does not necessary mean quick/fast food as our food is made fresh to order. Trying to create a gourmet meal out of ham, egg & chips is a challenge but I can confirm the ham is British and cooked fresh on a large joint, the eggs are British free range and although we are not making fresh chips at the moment we are using McCain Beefeater large chips which are the next best thing.
Your comments on the table next door to you about the bread was that they thought we had change the bread from when they had eaten at the Red Lion before. Jacqueline was trying to explain that it is the same bread from the same local supplier that the Red Lion had always used. We do not stipulate on the menu that the brown bread is granary but this is something we will do in the future. Jacqueline and I have taken over The Red Lion after the previous management retired. There will be some changes along the way as not everything stays the same and we understand that we cannot please all of the people all of the time. General feedback is that the pub is getting better in the 10 weeks we have taken over. Hence having a full busy restaurant when you came in. I am sorry for you disappointment and hope you give us the chance to show you that are staff are courteous and our food is of good standard for a country village pub.
