“Perfect evening”

Entertaining clients can be tricky as you can't please everyone - thankfully Bistro FORTY6 did just that.
Small establishment with a good friendly atmosphere and excellent service that made you feel as if you were welcome and not, as sometimes happens in larger chains, expected to eat pay and get out.
The food was excellent and all of us commented that it was the best meal we had had for some time. No complaints and will return soon.

“New venue”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

Visited this restaurant today for lunch as it had been recommended to us and is a new venture.
We were suitably impressed by the range of the menu both a la carte and the lunchtime special menu which at £11 for two courses is very good value.
My main course off the special was beef Stroganoff which was made using fillet steak and was delicious. My colleague had the sea bass which was cooked perfectly.
Talking to Michael the owner we found that he has two other restaurants one in Alnwick and one in Winlaton and it was obvious from the set up and menu choice he is a guy who knows his trade .
All in all we will be back and it's located just beside West Jesmond Station which means you can enjoy a glass or two without worrying about driving

“Disappointed”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We visited this restaurant on a living social voucher this weekend after friends had been and recommended it. We tried several times to book only to be told they were full so we took this as a good sign and had high hopes for the place. However we were disappointed with both the ambience and the food. The tables were very close together and the place had the atmosphere of a cafe not an intimate bistro. The food was nothing to write home about either. My husband had scallops which he said were cooked nicely and served with sautéed potatoes however they were suppose to come with a jus but which can only by described as gravy made with what appeared to be gravy granules poured over the top. My creamy mushrooms had a really odd taste which I couldn't work out what it was. I ordered stroganoff for main which had an awful taste of offal whilst by husbands fillet steak which he asked for medium was very well done and dry. Again this had an awful taste of offal. The place was quite busy but lacked any sort of atmosphere. The waiting staff at one point were standing at the bar scratching their lottery scratch cards!!! Overall we were extremely underwhelmed with our visit and wouldn't return again.

“First visit - quite impressed!”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

Bistro Fourty6, Jesmond

High expectations after reading many of the mainly ‘excellent & good’ TA reports, but was perhaps a bit underwhelmed . I was hoping it would have been a bit more plush & up-market. Simply furnished with mainly plain décor, wooden topped table and modern, high backed chairs. About 17 people dined whilst we were there - an early Friday evening. The place is fairly small, but with huge mirrors, it looks much bigger. Seating for approx. 25.
Plus points - excellent food, well presented with pleasant service. Good menu with several seafood choices. Some lovely ‘specials’. Menu varied daily. The wine offered as part of the ‘Living Social’ deal was very pleasant, both red & white. (and ‘yes’, I did have red wine with the prawns, white with the Sea Bass - see photo’s)
Minus points - Parking can be tricky due to the ‘residents permit / ticket’ system. Just 50p per hour until 6.30pm. 1/3 of the lamps were ‘out’ in the chandeliers. Flimsy paper serviettes. Toilets are in the basement, about 12 steps.
