Hotel du Vin & Bistro Newcastle
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Visited for an early evening meal on the fixed price menu (3 courses £16.95 including a glass of wine). This promised to be great value and it was!

Served complimentary Ciabatta with olive oil and balsamic; followed by Charcuterie with toasted bread, and a very good smoked salmon salad with tiny capers for starters. We then had a steak pie with huge pieces of melt in the mouth steak and Coq au vin. Despite good size portions we had to keep going and finish with warm chocolate brownie and banana bread and butter pudding - both topped with chocolate ice cream.

After a slightly uncomfortable service start when we had to specifically ask for the fixed price menu and then point out that it included wine, we found all staff to be good. We were there 2 hours in total on a fairly quiet evening which was fine for us but you may want to mention when ordering if you have to anywhere an hour later.

The hotel itself is great in line with the Du Vin chain, located 5 minutes walk from the Quayside amongst the various galleries and bars of the Ouseburn area.

Our bill including a local Wylam beer and discretionary 10% charge was a few pence over £45 and it was worth every penny (and more!).

We've eaten at a few Du vins across the country but never stayed in one as they are quite expensive and its either got to be for something special or at someone elses expense.
Situated on the quayside its well positioned for shops, sightseeing and nightime eating & drinking.
Staff were really friendly, proffessional yet informal and always greeted you with a smile.
We were shown to our room by a lovely girl who was pleasant and informing, she told us all about the history of the hotel, eating times, day, night and breakfast etc etc etc
Room was a good size with everything we needed, lovely complimentary toiletries, bed was really comfy and we had a fab nights sleep.
We were leaving pre-breakfast to catch an early flight so didnt do breakfast.
All in all a lovely stay and would return.

I love this chain and the Newcastle variant surpassed my expectations. A good location just a pleasant 10 minute walk into the city along the Quayside.

The welcome and check process was smooth and typically friendly ..you're in Newcastle after all. For the first night of my stay I was in La Rochelle which was excellent with a beautiful roll top bath within the suite which is a feature of this hotel. I needed to extend my stay and the next 2 nights were spent in Penfold an unusual circular room in the annex just across from reception. The room itself was excellent but I would have preferred a bit more privacy on a higher floor as this room overlooks the entrance to the hotel just a few feet above street level.

The breakfast was typically good and some friends and I enjoyed an excellent meal in the Bistro on a busy Saturday night. The service was reasonably good considering how busy the restaurant was and the food was very competitively priced.

One of the highlights for me was the excellent choice of Single Malt Whiskies in the bar. The barman is passionate and knowledgable about whisky and has been encouraged to develop a partnership with the Scots Malt Whisky Society. As a result, the hotel has a very good selection and some unusual single cask malts on offer to suit all pockets !!

All in all, this was an excellent stay and the Hotel du Vin will certainly be my preferred choice when in Newcastle.

Room Tip: Penfolds is a gorgeous room but is a little overlooked. You need to keep the curtains drawn which is...

We stayed in the Hotel du Vin whilst celebrating our second grandson's christening and first birthday. We had a twin room with a small terrace, which was very quiet....important to me as I am a neurotic sleeper. As usual, the reception staff were particularly pleasant, and on the Bank a Holiday Monday when the rest of the family joined us for breakfast, the restaurant staff made both the children very welcome.
The car park was very welcome, and it was an easy stroll into the city centre along Quayside.
We will be back.

Room Tip: Speak to the reception staff pre arrival

Took my husband here for his birthday and stayed one night in The Don Perignon Suite. The room is breathtaking although pricey as you would expect.
We ate in the bistro and although the food was delicious we felt a little cramped at our table.
The staff were very attentive and the cocktail waiter made excellent mojitos. We would return.

Went here a little while back as a birthday treat and must say my main was amazing (especially for the price). About 10 0z of beef heaven in delicious home made jous! though my better half had the chicken which (think it was the pancetta) was a bit salty. Informed the server who offered to make another one but decided it was good enough - The amazing Rioja made up for it ! will be back
