Novotel Newcastle Airport
Reviewed 9 May 2011

We stayed at this hotel on the 1st and 9th of April the night before departing and the night of arrival from a holiday with our 8 and 10 year olds. We booked the 8 day park and stay package in a family room.

On our first night which was a Friday we arrived about 6pm and were shocked by a group on a stag night some of them walking around with blow up sex dolls.

When we went to dinner the group had gone and we discussed the situation with the reception staff who said they cater for stag and hen parties as the hotel convenient for the city.

The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly but the food was extremely poor and expensive however breakfast was fine and the chef helpful.

In the early hours of the night we were disturbed with the noise of shouting and doors banging which went on for the remainder of the night.

We booked the airport shuttle for 10.30 but did not arrive until after 5 minutes to 11.00.

We arrived in the back at the hotel after our holiday just before 1.00am and after arriving at our room my wife went to reception to ask for two more cups. On the way she was accosted by a drunken male wandering in the corridor. For the next few hours there was lots of noise and banging of doors which disturbed all our sleep. We raised the matter on checkout and we were told our bill would be reduced. On arriving home and checked our bill it was reduced by £11.87 which we feel is an insult considering the both nights cost us £288.75 (with the £11.87 deducted).

The decoration of the hotel is modern and clean in both the rooms and public areas.

This hotel needs to decide if it caters for stag and hen nights or couples and families going on holidays as they do not mix.

We will not stay there again.

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at the Novotel; it's usually my first choice, but having paid £101 (I was quoted £109 by the hotel, but found cheaper elsewhere), I have to say I was disappointed.

Firstly the things that didn't reach the usual standards; the room was very tired looking and not quite what I had hoped for, the WC was very dingy and a bit smelly. The bathroom, although clean, was pokey, it would have been better to do away with the teeny tiny bath and just have a shower cubicle.

The room itself did not lend itself to a leisure stay, we had room service and had to eat on the bed otherwise we would have had to sit side by side at the desk/dressing table. I asked for an alarm call at 8.00am and I am still waiting - thank goodness we had an early afternoon flight and I asked for an account to be set up, but this didn't happen either.

On the positive side, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout, the food was lovely and we both slept very well, but I could have stayed nearer to the hotel for a lot cheaper, but chose this hotel as it had always been value for money, sadly not on this occasion.

Thanks to the drivers who took us to (11th April at 11.00am) and from (21st April at 1.15pm) the airport, both of whom were helpful and courteous, and more importantly for the homeward journey punctual.

We have stayed at this hotel a few times now. Though impersonal it is reliably & consistently clean & tidy with decent sized rooms, basic tea & coffee making facilities, en suit shower etc. It also has a small pool & gym if you get time to use them. However, we have never had to pay for the car park before (£5 per car per 24hours) & considering it's relatively remote location they obviously have a captive clientelle.
The man on reception told us we had adjoining rooms, we hadn't, & that breakfast was included, it wasn't. At £13.50 you're better popping down the road to Tesco who do a great breakfast for a fraction of the price.

Room Tip: Add £5 per car per night for parking

The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful, the room very clean, although pillows not comfortable.
The Metro is a few minutes walk, so less expensive than taking car into the city.
Food good value and wine list above average

Good hotel & some nice views. When I arrived we been told car park/internet will be free as we have deluxe room. But while signinging off we had to pay another 50quid for car park + internet.

So good to stay, but make sure terms & conditions are clarified.
