“Unsafe for Female Guests”
Reviewed 8 May 2007

I have just returned from a hen night in Newcastle. We stayed in Whites Hotel in Jesmond. The room was adequate. Three of use were allocated a room with a double bed and one camp bed - we paid a total of £195 b&b, £65 each.
On our return from our evening out at about 3am we discovered that two men were standing on the fire escape stairwell peering in at us in our room. We got a real fright so sought help from reception staff but were instead greeted with abuse.
There is no CCTV on this ouside stairwell and it passes bedroom windows.
NOT SAFE FOR FEMALE GUESTS.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 1 night and found the hotel fine. The carpets are a bit like something you would see in "The Shining" but the rooms had been recently decorated and although they wern't fantastic I have seen a lot worse. The rooms themselves were quite small but they were fine for us as we were only there 1 night. The bathroom was beautiful. Brand new fitted suite which was very modern and very clean.

The hotel has a great location with loads of pubs, bars and resturants near by and the town centre is only about 10mins walking.

I would probably return to this hotel. As I said...great location, very clean and they staff were great too just don't expect anything too fancy!

This hotel is a disgrace, the rooms were small and grubby. However i must admit they were clean but everything inside the room was about 20 years old. The hotel doesnt even have a restaurant just a large bar. The bar is nice but noisey and is the only amenity the hotel offers, the bar food is a disgrace. I can not believe a hotel of this size to offer no hotel food or have a restaurant.

We were with about 20 people in a hen party. only prob we had was we were all quoted £70 per room per night as so many. This was double checked numerous times. When we got there, they also wanted another £9 off each person (saying it should be £79 per room) we advised her that we were not paying the extra money and would all check into hotel next door so they would lose our custom, all of a sudden the lady changed mind and we got our first deal. My advice would be to get confirmation of booking and price sent out to stop them asking for more money.

All rooms were lovely, newly decorated, clean and nice bathroom. Only slight problem with hotel is that its located on a busy road and as it was the heatwave weekend we had to sleep with windows open as no fan was in room and the traffic was a bit noisey.

Bar downstairs has special offers on between 4-7.30. You hit a button and it tells you whether to pay full price, 2 for 1 or have drink for free which is good. Triple vodka and coke £3.50 - bargain!!! The foods great too, mostly 2 for the price of 1, so about £6 between 2 of you.

If your peckish after a night out, theres flyers downstairs and local takeaways deliver to the hotel for you until just before 3am which was great.

Breakfast in the morning is all cereals, fruit yoghurts, tea/coffee, fresh juice, also english breakfast and toast which was lovely.

Taxis always available right outside and its about £5 or less to all the shops and nightlife (if on a hen or stag do, we would recommend "buffallo Joes" party pub! its fantastic!

Hotel great, food and drink great and we really enjoyed ourselves there and would go back (if they put fans in the rooms in summer..........!!!!)

  • Liked — comfy rooms and great food and drink in trendy hotel bar
  • Disliked — wanting more money than arranged when checking in - which was sorted eventually
  • Tips/Secrets — great location, walls can be thin which means we can hear everything!! and i mean EVERYTHING.......................haha

This hotel could really do with being updated I've stayed in several hotels on this street (osbourne road) and this is certainly the worst in terms of rooms. There were holes in the cutains and on the blanket cover and the blankets they provide under the cover are appalling, they are really tatty and old and the bedding in general gives the room an old look.I havent stayed in a hotel with these sort of room options since 1998! The kettle also wasnt working but the reception staff were very efficient in getting another one to my room. The staff were friendly and polite just the rooms need to be updated, tatty looking. No other hotel on osbourne road has rooms like this!

I read wide-ranging reviews (terrible <-> good) about this hotel before visiting and i was rather apprehensive.... i feel i have to add my tuppence worth: the truth is that the hotel IS both awful and good!!! how? well for your mother (or tired travelling salesman) the place is absolutely dreadful; noisy, poorly maintained, shabby etc (they'd be much happier in a clean, scrubbed travelodge). make no mistake, this hotel suits stag/hen groups, sports teams, boozy mates weekends etc. Floors slope, showers trickle, furnishings are odd and dated... but location is great, bar downstairs was buzzing friday night with like-minded young folk 'up for it', and when we got in at 2am we were able to get a quiet pint... summary: if u like your travelodge/holiday inn (modern, predictable rooms) then STEER CLEAR! if ur not fussed (and in N'castle for 'the craic') then you could have a good laugh... just don't expect the Four Seasons!

I booked 3 rooms at Whites in early January as it was the only accommodation I could find close to the city centre-I now know why! The outside of the building is impressive and looks well maintained, that’s where the good comments end!
The hotel is to put it politely a dump! The room I had the misfortune to stay in had exposed electrical circuits, dirty bed linen and highly noticeable subsidence issues. As it was my stag night I could turn my attention away from these problems. However, at approximately 3.30am me and my best friend were woken by a large scale disturbance directly outside our room. Two large, drunken Scottish men were attempting to drag some unfortunate lad out of his room to administer a serve kicking! This went on for some time until the night porter assured the lad in question that the men would be removed from the building. However, at 8.30am the Scottish men returned to re-issue there numerous threats! After such a horrendous experience I asked the receptionist for a discount on our room rate (£79). She asked what the problem was-when I explained she was aware of all the problems I brought to her attention, but was unwilling to offer any form of discount. To make matters worse she informed me the two Scottish men are regular guests at Whites!!!! Please avoid this hotel at all costs it would have been safer to sleep on the street!
